The Lakers are heading into Monday’s roster deadline with work still to do, and one possible frontcourt fix is already on their radar.
Los Angeles has until Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. PST to trim its roster to the NBA’s maximum of 15 players, and the front office is still weighing every route available. That includes the possibility of a two-for-one trade, a move that could help the Lakers keep the best talent while getting down to the required number.
One name to watch is center Moussa Cisse. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Dallas Mavericks may be close to waiving Cisse, which would give the Lakers a chance to add depth in the middle before the regular season begins for Los Angeles on Weds.
Oct. 21.
Cisse appeared in 38 games for Dallas last season and posted 4.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 57.4% from the field. He did that in limited run, averaging just 13.9 minutes per game off the bench, but the numbers still point to a useful 23-year-old big man.
Adding Cisse would require a corresponding move, and that likely means waiving one of the Lakers’ two-way players. Chris Manon, Arthur Kaluma and AK Okereke are currently on those contracts, though it sounds as if the choice would probably come down to Kaluma and Okereke.
Manon appears safest of the group. The Lakers reportedly value him highly, and head coach JJ Redick recently made it clear that the team is “invested” in developing the 24-year-old perimeter defender. Manon has earned that trust with his defensive edge and scrappy play on the wing.
For general manager Rob Pelinka, the clock is very much ticking. He’s expected to keep working the phones right up to the deadline as the Lakers try to squeeze in one last move, or maybe two, before opening the season against the Golden State Warriors.

Hawks Face A Roster Squeeze If This Big Man Hits The Market
With the October 19 roster deadline approaching, Moussa Cisse has emerged as one of the more interesting names to monitor around the league. The Dallas Mavericks may be forced to make a tough call, and if Cisse reaches the market, there should be no shortage of teams taking a look. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers have all shown interest in the big man, giving his situation a little more weight than the usual end-of-camp churn.
For the Lakers, this is the kind of low-cost opportunity that can matter as teams sort through the final edges of their roster. Cisse has not been linked to any transaction yet, and nothing has been decided, but the fact that multiple clubs are watching suggests there could be a real scramble if he becomes available. Atlanta is in the same conversation, and the Hawks would be dealing with their own roster squeeze as they assess whether there is room to act before the deadline passes. [Read more 🡒]
Collin Sexton Just Made Lakers Backcourt Decisions A Lot Tougher
Collin Sexton was back in full practice with the Lakers on Monday as he works through lower-leg tightness, a welcome step for a team trying to sort out its backcourt before the regular-season opener against the Golden State Warriors. The injury had slowed his ramp-up, but getting him back on the floor at least gives Los Angeles a clearer read on where he stands physically.
His status for opening night is still up in the air, and the Lakers are treating it as a day-by-day situation. Even without a final decision yet, Sextons progress adds another layer to the rotation puzzle, since his return could force the staff to rethink how it pieces together the backcourt and the lineup around it. Stephen Curry Adds Tension To Lakers Opener For One Clear Reason
Stephen Currys status is now part of the early backdrop for the Lakers season opener after Golden State coach Steve Kerr addressed the guards right ankle tweak following an open practice. Kerr said Curry is fine, but stopped short of offering any recovery timeline, which is enough to keep the spotlight on the matchup even before the first tip of the year.
Charles Bassey is also listed as day-to-day with knee tendinitis, adding another variable as the Warriors sort through their options for the opener. Kerr also discussed possible lineup combinations for the game, but Currys availability remains the detail that will matter most to the Lakers as they wait to see how much of Golden States core is actually ready to go.
