Lakers Fans Still Wont Agree On What Went Wrong With Dalton Knecht

Metta World Peace voices his faith in Dalton Knecht's future despite the Lakers' recent decision to waive him from the roster.

The Lakers’ roster cut down to 15 guaranteed contracts on Monday ended with Dalton Knecht on the outside looking in.

Los Angeles had a few ways it could have gone, but the decision that had been circling for days became official when the team waived Knecht. That outcome matched the expectation around the league, even if it still stings for a former first-round pick who never quite turned into the player the Lakers were hoping for.

Now Knecht is set to find a new home for the 2026-27 season, and one former Laker isn’t ready to give up on him. Metta World Peace jumped on X after the move and made it clear he still sees real upside in the 25-year-old. World Peace said he thinks Knecht is a future All-Star.

"Man I wished I coached Dalton Knecht. Wherever he goes, let me head coach.

I love his game. He not white or black.

He’s just a baller and future All Star. I’ll make his ass work!!"

World Peace has plenty of credibility with Lakers fans. He was a key part of the franchise’s 16th title in 2010 and remains one of the most beloved names from that group.

Knecht did give the Lakers reasons to believe early on. In his rookie season, he flashed the shot-making and self-creation that made him an appealing prospect in the first place. His offense carried plenty of value, even if his defense stayed a problem.

But the momentum didn’t last. The former Tennessee Volunteer never found the same rhythm after the first half of the 2024-25 season, and the rescinded trade for Mark Williams proved to be a turning point he couldn’t shrug off. From there, his shot disappeared, his confidence faded and his place in the rotation slipped away.

The playoff numbers reflected how far he had fallen. Across two seasons in Los Angeles, Knecht appeared in seven playoff games - two in 2024-25 and five in 2025-26 - and averaged 2.1 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.4 assists while shooting 38.5% from the field and 33.3% from deep in 22 total playoff minutes.

By the time the 2026-27 season arrived, Knecht was already battling an uphill climb. He had a chance to repair the damage and work his way back into the mix, but his preseason didn’t help his case. In four exhibition games, he averaged 2.8 points on 25% shooting.

Walker Kessler Faces A Huge Lakers Test Right Away

Walker Kessler is about to get thrown right into the kind of spotlight that can define a Lakers season before it really gets going. In the opener against the Golden State Warriors, the big man is set for his official debut in purple and gold, and it comes after a frustrating shoulder injury limited him to just five games last season. For a team expecting him to be part of the frontcourt picture, the first night is already shaping up as a meaningful early gauge of where he stands.

JJ Redick has already framed Kesslers arrival as a developmental process, with the adjustment not just about health but about handling a bigger role and learning to mesh with new teammates. Kessler has said the pressure of joining the Lakers makes staying positive especially important, and that mindset may matter as much as anything when the season starts and the rhythm of a new team has to come together quickly. Austin Reaves Had The Perfect Reaction To LeBron In Sixers Gear

LeBron James in a different uniform is still the kind of sight that stops a room, and Austin Reaves had the sort of reaction plenty of Lakers fans probably felt when they saw it. After James left Los Angeles in free agency to join a 76ers group built around Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, the former Lakers teammate took in the preseason look and made it clear the image still carries some shock value.

For Reaves, the moment lands with a little extra weight because the Lakers are moving on without James and asking him to handle a bigger offensive load this season. James, meanwhile, is chasing another championship chance in Philadelphia, which only makes the transition more striking from Los Angeles side. Even in a preseason setting, seeing a familiar face in a new jersey is the sort of thing that lingers. [Read more 🡒]

Warriors Suddenly Face A Porzingis Problem They May Not Solve Soon

Kristaps Porzingis future with the Warriors has quickly become one of those situations that hangs over a roster even before a move is made. After signing a two-year contract extension, he has recently been away because of an autoimmune disorder called POTS, leaving Golden State to navigate a major uncertainty around a player who was supposed to factor into its plans.

The Warriors have started looking into trade possibilities, but there does not appear to be an immediate solution on the horizon. For now, the more realistic outcome is that Porzingis stays put while the team waits to see how his basketball future develops, a reminder that some roster questions are bigger than the transaction window.
