The Miami Heat’s patient approach with Klay Thompson may end up paying off in more ways than one.
After a long summer of misses on other free-agent targets, Miami finally landed Thompson, and the deal came with an unexpected bonus: financial breathing room. Because Thompson agreed to a first-year salary of $5.6 million, the Heat opened enough flexibility to fill both the 14th and 15th roster spots, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.
That matters because one of the names now connected to Miami is a familiar one. NBA insider Brett Siegel has pointed to Gabe Vincent as a possible return option for the Heat.
“Looking at the free agency pool and who is still out there, Gabe Vincent is another name that sticks out for the Heat. Although Vincent dealt with some knee problems and didn't look his best with the Los Angeles Lakers after leaving the Heat in 2023, he was an integral part of Miami's 2023 Finals run. Vincent has always been one of Erik Spoelstra's favorites, and this team could definitely use a veteran presence in its backcourt,” Siegel wrote.
Vincent’s best stretch came in Miami, where he became a fan favorite and played a significant role in the team’s run to the 2023 Finals. Since leaving for Los Angeles, things have gone in a much rougher direction. Injuries have been a major issue, and his availability has been limited.
“The Los Angeles Lakers will be active and aggressive ahead of the trade deadline, and Gabe Vincent’s play all but guarantees that he will be sent out in whatever deal Rob Pelinka makes. The guard is shooting under 40 percent from the field, and the Lakers have an abysmal 120.8 defensive rating with Vincent on the floor. He has played in just seven of the first 18 games, but Los Angeles fans know what to expect at this point,’” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote.
If Miami believes Vincent can stay on the floor, the fit makes sense. It would not require a major financial commitment, and the upside is clear: a veteran guard who knows the organization, knows Spoelstra’s system, and has already shown he can matter in big moments.
Vincent has made $37 million throughout his career, and Thompson’s cheaper deal is a big reason the reunion could even be on the table.
