JJ Redick left his first training camp practice with a pretty clean bill of health for the Lakers, even if a couple of players were kept away from contact work on Tuesday.
“There are no concerns health-wise,” Redick said.
Everyone on the roster took part in camp, according to Redick, but a pair of players did not go through the contact portion of the session. He did not name them, and he said those players should be back in that work later this week.
The update lands a day after Luka Doncic said he was entering camp with no restrictions after last season’s hamstring injury, giving the Lakers a reassuring early read on where the group stands physically.
Health is only part of the story here, though. Redick also made it clear that practice time is going to be competitive, and minutes won’t be handed out just because a player has a big name or a familiar role.
“It’s a meritocracy. You really have to earn your minutes,” Redick said.
That theme matters because the Lakers still have some sorting to do. Redick has already pointed to Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler as likely starters, which leaves two spots up for grabs around that trio. Quentin Grimes has already put his hat in the ring, saying he wants to start and plans to compete in camp for one of those openings.
Redick said the rotation will naturally stay fluid as the season moves along, with chances for players to break through even when injuries are not forcing the issue. That’s where the contact work becomes valuable: it lets the coaching staff see how different groups mesh, who opens space for Doncic, who can handle perimeter assignments and which combinations hold up on both ends.
For now, the main checkpoint is simple. If the limited players get back into contact later this week, the Lakers will have another step toward sorting out both their health and their rotation.
