Ayton recently shared with Dan Woike of The Athletic that he's had a reality check.
"I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘You’re not that guy. You’re here to be the effort guy, to close out possessions, rebound, and run the floor hard. Make the bigs and superstars work."
This self-awareness could be pivotal. While Ayton hasn't been flawless, his recent efforts in rebounding and defense show promise. Lakers fans are hopeful this mindset shift is genuine.
The Lakers don’t need "DominAyton"-they need evolution
Realizing that being a star might not be in the cards can be tough for a former top pick. Yet, history shows that players can redefine their careers successfully.
Take Andrew Wiggins, for example. Once hailed as "Maple Jordan," he found his niche with the Golden State Warriors, extending his NBA career.
Ayton needs to embrace a similar evolution. The Lakers already have stars; what they need are strong supporting players to ensure that the pressure of a deep playoff run doesn’t fall solely on Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James.
The stars in Los Angeles are generous passers. They want Ayton to be ready for lobs and to finish plays. Scoring opportunities will still come his way.
Ayton mentioned to Woike that he’s 'having fun' embracing his new role. Lakers fans are certainly hoping that this transformation is real.
