Iman Shumpert isn’t buying the idea that the Lakers are headed for a comfortable trip back to the postseason. His read on Los Angeles entering the 2026-27 season is much harsher: Luka Doncic may need to “pull a rabbit out of hat” just to get them through the door.
On Gil’s Arena, Shumpert pegged the Lakers as more of a play-in team than a straightforward Western Conference playoff club.
“I think it’s going to be a play-in type situation. I feel like they going to really be forcing it at the end - It’s going to be borderline, and it’s going to be borderline on some Luka got to pull a rabbit out of hat, and he needs somebody to lose over here.”
That’s the crux of Shumpert’s point: Los Angeles may need Doncic to carry a heavy load while also hoping the standings break in its favor elsewhere.
Gilbert Arenas wasn’t exactly radiating confidence either.
“I expect to get season tickets for real cheap this year. Them tickets need to go down. It’s like when, you know, it was like Nick Young, Robert Sacre.”
The comparison is a rough one, though this Lakers group does have far more firepower than those past versions. Doncic and Austin Reaves give them two high-end creators on offense, and Reaves stayed put on a four-year, $185 million deal after drawing strong interest from Brooklyn and Detroit, with the Pistons coming very close to handing him a max contract.
Los Angeles also made a massive bet on Walker Kessler, sending out two unprotected first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps before signing him to a four-year, $129.5 million contract.
Still, the questions are real. Luka missed the Lakers’ entire playoff run last season because of a hamstring strain, and the team fell apart without him.
It underscored just how dependent they are on their star. Doncic spent the offseason on conditioning and rehab, and he is reportedly around 231 pounds and arrives at camp in much better shape.
The concerns don’t stop there. Defense remains a major issue, and the Lakers’ failure to land Jonathan Kuminga could come back to bite them because they do not have a legitimate wing in the starting lineup.
ESPN has also pegged the Lakers as the most disappointing team in the NBA this season, and even league insiders have raised questions about the team’s health and roster fit as training camp approaches.
Shumpert may be too cautious if Doncic stays healthy and Kessler supplies the kind of defensive help the Lakers need. But his message was unmistakable: he does not see this team strolling into the playoffs. In his view, Los Angeles could be grinding through the final week and leaning on Doncic for one more burst of magic just to keep the season alive.
