JJ Redick Stuns Fans With Insight On Adou Thieros Lakers Rotation Role

JJ Redick sheds light on how Adou Thiero's impressive G-League performance and recovery from injury shape his developmental journey with the Lakers.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Adou Thiero has faced a rocky start to his NBA journey. Drafted 36th overall in 2025, Thiero's early career has been hampered by a lingering injury, leading him to spend significant time with the South Bay Lakers, the team's G League affiliate.

This detour might just be a blessing in disguise for Thiero's development. However, as JJ Redick pointed out, finding a spot for Thiero in the Lakers' rotation isn't straightforward. Redick shared insights on the situation:

"Adou and I discussed early on that this year would likely be about development, especially with his uncertain return from injury. The re-injury just reinforced that need. He needs to be playing basketball."

Redick also praised Thiero's recent G League performances, including a standout game with 25 points and six rebounds against the Santa Cruz Warriors.

"In four of the last five games, he's shown real promise. He's embracing his role," Redick added.

"But fitting him into our current rotation is tough. Even when we're healthy, it's a challenge to allocate minutes.

We want to give him opportunities, but they're just not available right now."

Adou Thiero's NBA stats reflect his limited playtime: 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds over 5.5 minutes per game in 19 appearances. His brief two-minute stint against the Minnesota Timberwolves underscores the scarcity of opportunities this season.

Despite this, Thiero is showing his potential in the G League, averaging 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game across seven appearances. His defensive instincts and athletic prowess, highlighted by a stunning dunk against the Iowa Wolves, hint at a bright future that Lakers fans can eagerly anticipate.

The rookie forward remains under contract for next season with a $2.1 million cap hit, keeping the Lakers hopeful about his growth. Given the team's current dynamics, it's understandable that Thiero isn't seeing consistent minutes just yet.

The Lakers have been clicking lately, with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves leading the charge and the bench playing a crucial role. Now tied with the Houston Rockets for third in the West (40-25), the Lakers seem wise to maintain their current rotation rhythm as they push for playoff positioning.
