Jeanie Buss Faces A New Threat To Her Lakers Control

Jeanie Buss fights to retain control of the Los Angeles Lakers as her siblings push for a sale of the team's shares amidst a heated family dispute.

The Buss family fight over the Lakers is back in the spotlight, and this time five siblings are openly pushing back against Jeanie Buss in court.

Jimmy, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss - described as five of the six siblings who voted to sell the Trust’s shares in the Lakers - filed their formal opposition this week, saying Jeanie Buss’s petition is “legally and factually baseless.” In a statement to The Athletic, the siblings said, “While discussions among the siblings continue, their focus remains on facilitating the proposed transaction and the Trust’s participation in it, while ensuring that all beneficiaries, including Jeanie, are treated equally. Today’s filing is a necessary step to protect those interests and ensure the transaction proceeds on schedule.”

According to a source with knowledge of the siblings’ thinking, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing legal dispute, their goal is for the Lakers’ sale to Kushner’s ownership group to close without legal delays. The trust also wants to ensure that any arrangement that could allow for Jeanie Buss to retain shares in the Lakers be offered equally to all other siblings.

The dispute comes after Jeanie Buss filed a petition in court as part of the latest round of family conflict surrounding the franchise. The Buss Family Trust still held 17.8 percent of the Lakers in last summer’s sale to Walter, a stake that allowed her to continue running the team because NBA Governors must hold at least 15 percent ownership of their team. If that stake is sold, Jeanie Buss would lose her position and her active involvement with the Lakers would end.

For now, the family standoff is headed for the courts. With five siblings aligned against her, Jeanie Buss is facing a tougher road in trying to keep her hold on the franchise.

Dalton Knecht Faces Two Huge Lakers Decisions This October

Dalton Knecht enters October with his Lakers future hanging on two separate calendar checkpoints, and both carry real roster implications for a team that has already spent the offseason sorting out its long-term pieces. First comes the opening-night cutdown, when Los Angeles has to trim the roster to 15 players, a process that can force some hard decisions even before the season starts. For Knecht, it is less about whether he belongs in the picture and more about how securely the Lakers want to keep him positioned inside it.

Then comes the contract decision window at the end of the month and into early November, when the Lakers will have to decide whether to pick up his team option for the 2027-28 season. Exercising it would keep his deal moving forward and maintain control over his status, while passing would change the shape of his future in Los Angeles and leave his path toward free agency much more open. For a player who already has two looming dates on the same October calendar, the next few weeks are about more than just surviving roster math. [Read more 🡒]

Lakers Wing Suddenly Facing Serious Pressure In New Luka Lineup

The Lakers spent the 2025 offseason reshaping the roster, and the ripple effects are already showing in preseason. After bringing in Luka Doncic and signing Walker Kessler, the team has been working through how the pieces fit, especially on the wing, where JJ Redick is trying to balance new offensive combinations with the defensive demands that come with a deeper group.

In the 2026 preseason, Redick opened with Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle ahead of Austin Reaves LaRavia, a notable shift for a player who started many games last season. It does not settle the rotation by any means, but it does signal that the Lakers are still sorting out who best complements Doncic in the lineup, and the competition at those wing spots looks very real. Max Christie Is Playing For More Than Just A Bigger Dallas Role

Max Christies rise in Dallas has given him more than a bigger offensive role. During media availability at the NBA China Games 2026, the guard reflected on what it has meant to share the floor with stars such as LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, a reminder of how much his career has already been shaped by elite company. Selected 35th overall by the Lakers in 2022, Christie was traded to the Mavericks in 2025 and turned in his best NBA season in 2025-26, averaging 12.3 points per game.

Now the bigger question is how Dallas wants to keep building around him. Preliminary contract extension talks between Christie and the Mavericks have reportedly begun, which adds a layer of importance to what he has already shown in a breakthrough year. For a player whose path started in Los Angeles and has since taken a clear step forward in Dallas, the next move could say plenty about how the Mavericks view his long-term place in their plans.
