Jarred Vanderbilt didn’t just leave Slovenia with a few good memories from the Lakers’ team-building minicamp. He left sounding like a man who might actually want a longer-term relationship with the place.
The trip, hosted by Luka Doncic and wrapped up on August 24, mixed in plenty of downtime with a little basketball work. The Lakers hit tourist spots, played golf and fished, and even added a hospital visit on the final day to spend time with children before heading home.
That stop clearly meant something to Vanderbilt.
“It was amazing. The kids didn’t react; I don’t think they were old enough, but the parents were very grateful.
It means everything to see the smile on their faces. I know they just went through labor and stuff like that, so it was amazing.
The trip was great, so the way to end it was to go to the hospital and give back to the community. So, it was nice.”
Then came the line that turned a pleasant trip into a possible basketball subplot.
“I would love to. Not going to lie, didn’t know much about it before I came here, but it is definitely a spot I would revisit.
So, I’m looking to get my Slovenian passport. We’ll see.
Might be part Slovenian.”
That kind of comment naturally raises the question: is this just a joke, or is there a real pathway here? In basketball, passport moves are hardly unprecedented. And for Vanderbilt, the door may already be cracked open.
The Lakers have already seen Jaxson Hayes become eligible to join Luka Doncic on the Slovenian national team after acquiring a Slovenian passport. So if Vanderbilt ever decides to go down that road, the precedent is there.
There’s also the practical side of it. A spot with the USA men’s national team doesn’t look likely, given the depth of talent in that pipeline. And Vanderbilt’s role with the Lakers doesn’t exactly put him in the spotlight as a major offensive engine.
He remains a useful defender, the kind of player who can check multiple positions and bring real value on that end. But his numbers last season - 4.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game - show why he wasn’t one of the Lakers’ most impactful rotation pieces overall.
Even so, Slovenia could use that kind of versatility. The Slovenian men’s team is fighting for a place in the group stages of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers and sits at 3-3 in Group L, which puts it in the bottom half but still alive in the race to move on.
Doncic’s absence has been part of the problem, and one of his Slovenian teammates has already said as much. Getting Doncic back would change everything. Adding Hayes and maybe even Vanderbilt would only make the roster stronger.
