The stars in Los Angeles are already doing the heavy lifting, but James Worthy thinks the Lakers’ real swing factor in 2026-27 lives a little deeper down the roster.
During an appearance on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, the Lakers legend and Spectrum SportsNet analyst laid out the role players he believes could tilt the season. Jake LaRavia was the first name out of his mouth, and Worthy liked the way the forward has adjusted his stroke.
“Jake LaRavia changed his shot,” Worthy said. “… He’s very consistent with it.
With his size and his ability to play multiple positions, he’s got to be a key factor, I think. Some of the new guys like [Sandro Mamukelashvili].
Mamu, he’s a X-factor. So if I had to choose two, I would choose those two, but [Quentin] Grimes and [Collin] Sexton or [Ziaire] Williams, those would be my other two.
“Because in today’s league, you got to have somebody to go after some of these guards,” Worthy continued. “… I mean, we got some good bigs, but when you’re going after Jaylen Browns and the [Shai Gilgeous-Alexanders] and guys like that, you got to have some guys that can muster up like this brother here. Get in your face, taking up some of your oxygen.
“So a guy like Grimes would fit the mold, who can shoot the three as well,” Worthy added. “And then anybody like Williams or Mamu. I think is going to be key.”
The names Worthy highlighted have all carved out different jobs, and the production reflects that. Mamukelashvili won’t be asked to chase down elite perimeter scorers, but he has given the Lakers quality minutes on the offensive end. In 2026-27, he’s averaging 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game while knocking down 40.0% of his threes.
LaRavia, meanwhile, has taken Worthy’s words about a changed shot and backed them up with numbers. After hitting just 32.1% from deep for the Lakers last season, he’s up to 40.0% this year. He’s also averaging 5.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2026-27.
Williams has found his way into the starting group alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler, and he has held up his end of the bargain. He is posting 11.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game while shooting 41.7% from three.
Grimes, who was thought to be in line for a starting role, has instead settled into the bench mix. Even so, he’s still giving the Lakers 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game in 2026-27. His 37.5% mark from beyond the arc has him among the team’s least accurate shooters, which says plenty about how well the rest of the roster has shot it.
Sexton was another name Worthy brought up, and Danny Green had already mentioned him as one of his own X-factors for the team. Through this season, Sexton is averaging 9.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, though his three-point shooting sits at 25.0%.
That depth has helped Los Angeles jump out to a 3-0 start. The Lakers’ next test comes Tuesday against the 2-0 Portland Trail Blazers at Crypto.com Arena at 11 p.m. ET, and it may be their toughest challenge so far this season.

Jarred Vanderbilt Suddenly Has A Lakers Opportunity He Can't Waste
The Lakers front-court picture tightened quickly ahead of their game against the Clippers, with Luka Doncic and Ziaire Williams both ruled out because of injuries. With the roster suddenly thinner up front, JJ Redick said Jarred Vanderbilt could be asked to handle backup-center duty out of necessity, a notable shift for a player who has not seen the floor in the teams first four games.
For Vanderbilt, the timing is hard to miss. The nine-year veteran has spent the early part of the season on the outside looking in, but the Lakers now need bodies and versatility more than ever in the middle. Whether this turns into a short-term patch or a bigger opening depends on how he handles the chance when it arrives, and whether Redick feels comfortable leaning on him in a role that was not part of the original plan. Lakers Fans Just Got A Wild New Lamar Odom Story
Lamar Odom is back in the spotlight in a very different way, and Lakers fans have a new off-court storyline to follow. The former NBA forward and two-time champion has joined OnlyFans, signaling that he wants to share a more personal and playful side of his life outside the game.
Rachel Bradley, Odoms girlfriend, has also signed up for the subscription-based platform, which only adds another layer of intrigue to the move. It remains to be seen whether the two will team up on content or keep their pages separate, but the setup alone has already given longtime Lakers followers plenty to talk about. [Read more 🡒]
Clippers Have A Clear Chance To Punish One Lakers Weakness
Before the Clippers and Lakers even tipped off, JJ Redick was already circling one area where Los Angeles has been vulnerable: the boards. Redick talked before the game about Walker Kesslers need to tighten up his rebounding, especially on the defensive glass, a topic that carries extra weight for a Lakers team sitting at the bottom of the NBA in rebounding.
Kessler has averaged 8.2 rebounds a game this season, a career low per 36 minutes, but Redick said he sees the ability there for him to be better in that department. For the Lakers, the concern is obvious: against a Clippers team looking for any edge, second-chance chances and missed box-outs can turn into the kind of game-deciding pressure that exposes a thin margin for error.
