James Worthy liked what he saw from Sandro “Mamu” Mamukelashvili enough to put the new Lakers forward in rare company.
After the Lakers’ preseason loss to the Nuggets, Worthy compared Mamukelashvili’s game to Manu Ginobili, and he didn’t stop there. On Spectrum’s postgame show, Worthy said: “His style of play, like Manu a little bit.
Lefty, guy that can herky jerky, can get in the lane, can create shots, can start to break. Tough as nails, physical.”
Mamukelashvili backed up the praise with a productive night, finishing with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists against Denver.
Worthy’s evaluation was glowing from there. He said: “I think he’s going to be a major, major asset to this team.
“I knew he had skills, but what he’s shown us just in this short sample, he’s pretty solid, high octane.”
Austin Reaves also singled out Mamukelashvili after the game, saying the Lakers have been urging him to push the ball up the floor and help inject more pace into the offense.
The fit is already part of JJ Redick’s thinking. At Lakers media day, Redick called Mamukelashvili an “offensive connector” and said he can slide into different spots depending on the matchup.
“He can fit in a number of places. I’m sure he’ll see minutes versus certain teams at the five. He’ll play some on the wing.”
That flexibility matters for a Lakers roster with several new pieces Redick is trying to blend together. However the rotation shakes out, Mamukelashvili looks set to have a real role once the season starts.

Lakers Opener Looms With One Big Question About This New Core
The Lakers wrapped up their 2026-27 preseason with a little of everything, including encouraging stretches from new additions Ziaire Williams and Sandro Mamukelashvili. For a roster trying to settle into a new look, those flashes mattered, even if the overall picture still felt unfinished. There was enough there to make the early returns intriguing, but not nearly enough to say the group is already in sync.
What stands out more heading into the opener is how little Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler got to share the floor together. Add in the turnover issues that showed up during the exhibition slate and Collin Sexton missing the preseason with an injury, and the Lakers still have some sorting out to do once the games count. The talent is obvious, but the first real test is whether this new core can sharpen quickly enough to avoid a slow start. [Read more 🡒]
Adou Thiero Is Forcing His Way Into A Real Lakers Debate
The Lakers have spent the offseason trying to reshape their roster around youth and athleticism, and Adou Thiero has already become one of the more interesting pieces in that conversation. The second-year wing has put together encouraging preseason work and, in the process, earned the trust of coach JJ Redick as a player who can help bring energy and versatility to a group still sorting out its best combinations.
Even with a minor injury slowing him right now, Thiero looks like a legitimate candidate to push for regular rotation minutes once the season gets moving. For a Lakers team looking for more defensive edge and more legs on the perimeter, his path is simple in theory and competitive in practice, which is exactly why this is starting to feel like a real debate rather than a training-camp subplot.
