Giannis Antetokounmpo didn’t sugarcoat anything after the Miami Heat were run out by the Los Angeles Lakers, and his message landed squarely on his own team.
The Lakers rolled to a 138-117 win, a result that made the gap between the two sides look plenty obvious. Miami had no real answer for Luka Doncic, who kept rolling in MVP candidate form and finished with 42 points.
Afterward, speaking via Hoops Chef, Giannis took aim at the Heat’s effort level and the way they’ve been handling the defensive end. When asked what was going wrong, he said: “Not playing hard enough.
We’ve got to play hard. You know, we’ve got to have some pride, individual pride, first of all.
“Then we’ve got to keep one another accountable, but trust one another defensively. Right now, we don’t trust one another. We’re not giving that extra effort.
“We did it for two games, but we keep letting bad habits creep up in games that we don’t really want. We go one direction, and then all of a sudden, we go back the other direction.”
Miami’s record now sits at 2-5, leaving them 10th in the Eastern Conference. The Lakers, meanwhile, moved to 6-2 and sit fourth in the West.
Giannis also made clear he expects a response, even if he can’t control everything around him. “I can control my actions and what I do.
Usually, after a bad whooping like this, you’ve got to find a way to respond. I tend to respond.
“There are 17 players in this locker room, and this is what I mean by accountability, when somebody sets the tone, others have got to follow. Right now, we just have glimpses of it. We’ve got to do a better job, and it starts with me.”
He did his part on the scoreboard, putting up 30 points against the Lakers. But Miami didn’t get much help behind him, with no other Heat player reaching 20.

Bryce James Arizona Debut Already Raised One Big Question
Bryce James finally got his first official college minutes for Arizona, and the debut came in a game that immediately invited more questions than answers. In a loss to UCLA, the freshman guard played six minutes, finished without a point and did manage one assist, a modest opening night line for a player whose name alone guarantees extra attention every time he steps on the floor.
For Lakers fans following the James family tree, the timing only added to the intrigue. LeBron James was busy turning in a strong all-around performance for the 76ers in their win over the Bulls, while Bronny James saw brief action for the Lakers in their victory over the Heat. So when Bryces role stayed limited in Tucson, it stood out in a way that goes beyond a box score and leaves the next Arizona game with a little more weight attached to it. [Read more 🡒]
Luka Doncic Is Forcing A New Lakers Identity To Take Shape
The Lakers have spent plenty of time this season trying to sort out their defensive identity, but Derek Fisher sees a different path taking shape around Luka Doncic. In Fishers view, the way to ease some of those defensive concerns is to lean into the pressure Doncic puts on opponents at the other end, where his scoring has become the engine of the teams momentum.
Doncic has been setting the tone early and often, and that kind of start can change the feel of a game before it ever settles in. He is averaging 38.3 points per game this season and has topped 40 points in four of his last five, a stretch that helps explain why the Lakers can look so different when he gets rolling right away. Luka Doncics Hot Start Is Already Drawing All-Time Respect
Luka Doncics opening stretch with the Lakers has been the kind that forces even rival stars to stop and take notice. Through seven games in the 2026-27 season, he has been carrying a massive load for Los Angeles, piling up points while still filling the box score with rebounds and assists, and the production has kept the Lakers in the conversation every night he steps on the floor.
The latest reminder came against the Heat, when Doncic poured in 42 points and kept the pressure on Miami from start to finish. Afterward, Giannis Antetokounmpo added to the growing chorus around Doncics start by putting him in rarefied company as a scorer, another sign that this early-season run is already resonating well beyond Los Angeles.
