The Miami Heat still have one open roster spot, and the way things are set up, they can fill it without running into the hard cap. That gives them some flexibility, and it also means the decision can be made with a little more patience.
With 14 of the maximum 15 roster spots already occupied, the Heat have room to add a 15th player below the hard cap created by the moves to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, as Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman wrote.
One name that keeps coming up is Gabe Vincent. The former Heat guard has been tied to Miami, and Bam Adebayo has reportedly been among the people pushing for a reunion.
“I would expect them to go guard for one of their final spots, I think a Gabe Vincent reunion there makes a lot of sense, especially since Bam Adebayo and Erik Spoelstra have been big advocates for him ever since Summer League. I would think that it is very likely at this point that they would give that to Gabe Vincent if he's willing to take a minimum (contract) there.
I would expect them to go guard for one of their final spots. I think that Gabe Vincent, a reunion there makes a lot of sense," NBA insider Brett Siegel said.
Vincent was a popular figure during Miami’s Finals run, and the Heat have continued to keep him in the mix. Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney reported that Miami has considered Vincent and Cam Payne, though the team would like more upside if it can find it.
“The Heat have weighed the likes of veteran backups Gabe Vincent and Cam Payne, but would prefer to find someone with a better upside. They do need a placeholder for that spot, though,” Deveney wrote.
Vincent’s stint with the Los Angeles Lakers never really clicked. Injuries got in the way early, and when he finally got back on the floor, he had trouble getting comfortable.
He has earned $37 million in his career, and from Miami’s perspective, the risk is pretty small. If Vincent is healthy, he brings shooting and familiarity. If it doesn’t stick, the Heat still have enough shooting on the roster to absorb it.
