Bronny James’ rough preseason now has a clearer explanation.
The Lakers guard, entering his third year, has struggled to make much of an impression in exhibition play, and now it’s been revealed that a quad contusion has been part of the story. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that James “has been limited by a quad contusion he suffered just before the start of training camp, sources told ESPN, and Redick added that the third-year guard has often shared the court with training camp invitees, rather than rotation players, and noted how James finished last season as a playoff contributor.”
That context helps explain some of the numbers, because James shot 25% from the field in the preseason while averaging 2.4 turnovers and 2.8 assists. It’s not the kind of stretch that helps clarify his role heading into the season, especially with a Lakers roster that’s trying to settle into a new era around Luka Doncic.
James’ defensive reputation still gives him a path to minutes, but the offense has to come along too if he wants to stay on the floor. Head coach JJ Redick said the summer work was encouraging even if the preseason hasn’t been.
“I thought he had a really nice September and a good summer with us. I don't think he's played well in the four preseason games, but he's had good practices,” Redick said.
If James can’t turn that around, the Lakers’ ball-handling depth behind Doncic and Austin Reaves could be thin when the season opens, particularly if the rest of the supporting cast doesn’t pick things up.

Bronny James Is Back In The Spotlight For An Ugly New Reason
Bronny James found himself back in the spotlight Tuesday night for a reason no young player wants. During NBCs pregame coverage of the Knicks-Sixers game, comedian Tracy Morgan took a critical shot at him, and the remark spread quickly online as the reaction turned into a fresh round of debate on social media.
For the Lakers, the timing is an unwelcome distraction as the family name keeps drawing extra attention around the league. LeBron James scored 14 points in Philadelphias 106-100 win over New York, and Bronnys team now turns its attention to the Golden State Warriors, with the noise around him likely to follow right along. Warriors Suddenly Face A Porzingis Problem They May Not Solve Soon
Kristaps Porzingis has become one of the more complicated names in Golden States orbit after signing a two-year extension with the Warriors, only to recently step away because of an autoimmune disorder called POTS. The teams interest in adding him was clear when it locked in the deal, but the on-court portion of that plan has been slowed by a health situation that has left his basketball future uncertain.
Golden State has started to look around for trade possibilities, but any movement appears distant at best. For now, the more likely outcome is that the Warriors keep Porzingis on the roster while his situation develops, leaving them to balance roster planning with a far less certain timeline than they expected when they made the extension. Luka Already Has A Lakers Problem Warriors Fans Will Notice
Luka Doncics first look in a Lakers uniform already came with a familiar edge. In his preseason debut, he picked up a technical foul, a small moment on paper but one that fits a larger pattern that has followed him throughout his career. He has made it clear he wants to lead this team and be out there for every game this season, giving the Lakers a star presence and a clear voice from the start.
The concern, as always, is whether that intensity stays pointed in the right direction. Doncic has a history of arguing with officials, and it once caught up to him when a technical foul total pushed him into a suspension. For a Lakers team trying to build around his talent and durability, keeping that frustration from becoming a recurring issue may matter just as much as anything he does with the ball. [Read more 🡒]
