Austin Reaves isn’t sugarcoating what the Lakers have been dealing with on the defensive end - and after two days of training camp, he sounds convinced that’s changing fast.
The guard pointed to the new wave of perimeter and rim protection around him, saying the group has already made life miserable in practice. With Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, Adou Thiero and Walker Kessler in the mix, Reaves said the Lakers are walking into this season with a very different defensive identity.
“Let me tell you, trying to score on Matisse and Ziaire, especially with Adou out there too, and then Walker on the back line, is not easy. I had to deal with that all day yesterday and today, and it’s not fun.”
He doubled down on that point when asked about the team’s outlook.
“Defensively, we’re gonna be much better. Those guys compete every possession, and everybody else fills in their roles and plays the right way. I see how special we can be,” Austin Reaves explained.
Reaves also made it clear the new faces have already been a nuisance in the best possible way.
“They all annoy the hell out of me. As I said, Matisse and Ziaire were on the same team yesterday, and it wasn’t my team, which wasn’t fun. But it’s good to just get those reps in early.”
The praise didn’t stop there. Reaves said both Thybulle and Williams bring the kind of length and versatility that can change possessions on the fly.
“I think they’re two of the best defenders in the league. They can guard multiple positions; they’re long, and Matisse’s anticipation is top tier. I’m excited to have them on our team and see what they can do,” he further added.
He was just as enthusiastic about Thiero, who has already been putting in work against him over the summer.
“Adou has been guarding me all summer when we’ve been playing pickup and stuff. He’s a freak of nature, moves as well as anybody. One of the best athletes in the league.”
Reaves added that Thiero still has another layer to unlock.
“Once he starts thinking about the game more, as we’ve talked about a lot this summer, he’s asked a lot of questions. So he’s very interested in learning, and that’s what he needs,” Reaves concluded.
The optimism comes with real numbers behind it. In 2025-26, the Lakers finished 15th in defensive rating at 116.2 and ninth in offensive rating at 117.2. The offense was never the issue, but the defense kept them from looking like the kind of team that can truly chase a title.
Around the league, the standard is usually clear: teams need to crack the top ten in both offense and defense to be taken seriously as championship contenders. The Thunder, the Spurs, and the Knicks all fit that mold last season, finishing top five in both categories.
That’s why the Lakers’ summer work matters so much. With Luka Doncic and Reaves expected to drive the offense, the burden on the new defensive additions is obvious. If Thybulle, Williams, Thiero and Kessler can raise the floor on that end, the Lakers may be positioned to take a real step toward contention.

Lakers Teammate Just Pushed Luka Doncic Into A Wild New Debate
Training camp has opened with new faces around Luka Doncic, and even before the first preseason games, the conversation around the Lakers newest star is already turning lofty. Sandro Mamukelashvili added fuel to it during an ESPN Radio interview, praising Doncic as perhaps the best offensive player in the league right now, a kind of compliment that carries extra weight when it comes from a teammate seeing the day-to-day version up close.
The debate, of course, is bigger than one sound bite. Doncics scoring and playmaking have long invited comparisons to names like Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, but the final line in his rsum still separates him from the all-time standard-bearers: he has not yet led a team to a championship. For the Lakers, that makes every rave review feel both natural and loaded, because admiration is easy in September, while the real test comes when the season starts asking for more than highlights. Luka Doncic Had Austin Reaves Cracking Up At Lakers Practice
Luka Doncic brought a little extra energy to Lakers practice, and Austin Reaves could only laugh at it. While Reaves was doing a media interview, Doncic stepped in and drilled a flurry of half-court shots, turning the session into an impromptu shooting display and briefly stealing the rooms attention.
Reaves commented on the streak in the moment, and the video backed it up by showing Doncic make four of five attempts from beyond half court. It was a small snapshot, but it fit the easygoing chemistry and competitive banter the two have already shown while working together this season, with both players carrying meaningful roles for Los Angeles. Bronny James Responds After LeBrons Stunning 76ers Move
LeBron James move to the Philadelphia 76ers closes an eight-season run with the Lakers, and it leaves Bronny James in a very different place than the one he entered the league in. The younger James remains with Los Angeles, where his career will now unfold without the daily spotlight of sharing a roster with his father, a setup that had made every step of his rookie journey feel tied to family history.
Bronny said he is excited about what comes next and made clear he wants to build his own identity rather than live entirely inside LeBrons legacy. For the Lakers, it adds another layer to an already unusual transition, with one James out the door and the other now trying to define himself on his own terms in Los Angeles. [Read more 🡒]
