Austin Reaves didn’t shy away from the reality of sharing a court with Luka Doncic. The fun part, he said, is the constant attention Doncic draws.
The frustrating part? Keeping up with what Doncic is saying.
Speaking on ESPN’s Mason and Ireland Show during Lakers Media Day, Reaves broke down what stands out most about teaming with Doncic.
“I think the best part is the attention he’s going to have every single night. You know it is tough to guard Luka with five people, so I’m likely going to be over here just hanging out, and when he throws me the ball, I’ll likely be open, so I think that’s the best part,” Austin Reaves said with a chuckle.
He also made it clear that he sees his role as whatever helps Doncic most.
“Just being able to complement him in whatever he needs. Whether it’s catch-and-shoot or being the primary ball handler in a couple of possessions, I do whatever I can to make his life easier,” he further explained.
Then came the line that landed as the joke of the day.
“And I think the hardest part is to understand his English on the court. He gets to talking fast.
Speaking in Slovenian, Serbian. He speaks four languages.
Sometimes I’m looking at him, and I’m like, ‘English. Talk to me in English; I need English,'” Austin Reaves hilariously added.
Reaves also talked about the Lakers’ trip to Slovenia and said the visit helped strengthen team chemistry. He noted that the group got a firsthand look at the level of love and appreciation Doncic receives back home.
That chemistry matters even more now. With LeBron James no longer on the roster, the picture around the Lakers’ leadership has become much clearer, and Reaves is expected to shoulder a bigger voice alongside Doncic heading into the 2026-27 season.
Doncic himself sounded encouraged by what he has seen from Reaves. At his Media Day press conference, he pointed to the guard’s growth and the way he’s started taking on more responsibility with teammates.
“Yeah, I think he improved a lot. I think he just, how do you say, he talks more to a lot of people.
Obviously, the new players, they’re going to look up to him and ask him things. So, I think he took a big step forward,” Doncic said.
Reaves has the production to back up the added responsibility, too. He put together a career-best 2025-26 season, averaging 22.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 48.1% from the field and 35.0% from beyond the arc in 57 games, including the playoffs.
Now he enters a pivotal year with more on his plate, and the Lakers will be counting on him as one of the key voices in the room with Doncic. If the partnership keeps trending the right way, it could end up shaping a big part of the team’s future.
