Austin Reaves Has Lakers Fans Wondering About One Big Change

With the NBA season approaching, Austin Reaves' sneaker choices spark speculation about his endorsement future amid a surprising shift from Rigorer to Nike.

Austin Reaves’ sneaker situation has turned into one of the early storylines of the NBA preseason.

Rigorer, the Chinese sportswear brand that built Reaves’ signature AR line, is still putting out his shoes. Reaves, though, has already moved on in game action. He showed up at NBA Media Day in September wearing his AR3, then switched over to Kobe Bryant’s retro Nike basketball shoes during preseason games this month.

That kind of change isn’t rare around the league. Sneaker deals can run out at the end of September, and players often debut new looks in early October. But in Reaves’ case, a clean break would be a real surprise.

Rigorer was still pushing the AR3 “Flames” colorway on Instagram less than 24 hours ago, which makes the whole thing even harder to read. The partnership had looked sturdy from the outside.

Reaves first signed with Rigorer in 2022, becoming the brand’s first NBA athlete. By June 2023, he had landed a multi-year signature sneaker deal.

Not long after that, the two sides went a step further. Reaves and Rigorer agreed to a contract extension that made the Lakers guard a shareholder in the company.

The agreement was worth more than seven figures per year, along with royalties from his signature shoe sales. As an equity partner, Reaves also received a substantial number of shares over the life of the contract.

Still, Lakers fans got a jolt when Reaves wore the Nike Kobe 5 Protro “Dodgers” colorway against the Sacramento Kings.

It might end up being nothing more than a short-term hiccup, the kind that gets sorted out quickly. But it also could be a sign that Reaves is entering sneaker free agency.

The timing matters, and so does the market. Players can boost their leverage by performing well in major NBA cities, and Reaves could benefit from that in any new deal talks, even if he is not an All-Star-caliber player.

There’s also a reason Reaves’ shoe line carried real weight in the first place. His first three signature Rigorer basketball shoes drew strong reactions from both athletes and fans. The AR line was affordable, packed with solid performance tech, and came with colorways that stood out thanks to Lakers references and nods to Reaves’ hobbies.

The regular season still hasn’t started, but the sneaker conversation already has plenty of juice. The next big checkpoint comes when the Lakers face the Golden State Warriors on October 13. That’s when everyone will be watching Reaves’ feet.

Castro arrives with a bit of recent NBA transaction history, having spent time on a two-way arrangement elsewhere before landing in Los Angeles. The move comes as the Lakers continue to evaluate depth and flexibility around the front line, and with two-way decisions looming, every camp addition carries a little more weight than usual. Lakers Still Waiting On One Crucial Walker Kessler Step

Walker Kessler was back around the Lakers on Saturday, taking part in practice, but the biggest box on his rehab checklist still was not checked. He remained out of live scrimmaging as he works his way back from the finger injury he picked up in training camp, and he has not yet appeared in any preseason game.

JJ Redick said Kessler might be ready to scrimmage again on Sunday, but stopped short of saying whether that would put him on track for Tuesdays preseason matchup with the Golden State Warriors. For now, the Lakers are still waiting on the next step in Kesslers return, with his availability still up in the air as camp winds on. [Read more 🡒]

Nick Young Shares A Side Of Kobe Lakers Fans Rarely Saw

Nick Young recently looked back on what it was like to share a locker room with Kobe Bryant during Bryants final years with the Lakers, offering a reminder that the late stars influence went far beyond what fans saw on the court. On a podcast, Young described a version of Bryant that blended relentless competitiveness with a real effort to keep teammates connected away from the arena, including annual team gatherings built around social time and entertainment.

The picture Young painted is of a veteran star who could still demand the highest standard while also understanding the value of chemistry and camaraderie. For Lakers fans, it adds another layer to Bryants legacy, showing how he balanced the edge that defined his game with a willingness to support the people around him in ways that rarely made headlines.
