Austin Reaves is still adjusting to a sight that feels wrong on pure basketball instinct: LeBron James in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform.
James spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers before leaving in free agency, and the move put him on a stacked 76ers group with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown. The Lakers, meanwhile, used their first real chance to build around Luka Doncic and Reaves by making a slew of signings.
That doesn’t make the visual any less strange for Reaves, who shared a locker room with James for five seasons. Ahead of the Lakers’ season-opener Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, Reaves admitted his first reaction to seeing James in another team’s jersey was a little too honest.
“I almost texted [LeBron], told him he looked crazy,” Reaves told reporters ahead of the Lakers' season-opener on Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, via Carlos Yakimowich of The Sporting Tribune. “It's different.
But you know, that's my guy. I wish him the best and I'll definitely watch [the 76ers' season opener vs. the New York Knicks].”
James was a force for the Lakers in the 2026 NBA playoffs, posting 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists as he and Reaves kept the team fighting through Doncic’s injury issues.

Still, the 41-year-old decided he wanted another real shot at a championship, and he viewed Philadelphia as the place that gave him the best path. The Lakers have talent, but the Western Conference remains a brutal gauntlet.
For Reaves, the change in scenery comes with a bigger opportunity, too. He is coming off a season in which he averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, and now he steps into the role of clear second scoring option with the offense running alongside Doncic.
It’s a striking rise for a player who entered the league as a crowd favorite off the bench in his rookie season and won James over along the way. Now he’s one of the Lakers’ main guys.

Walker Kessler Faces A Huge Lakers Test Right Away
Walker Kessler is about to get thrown right into the kind of spotlight that can define a Lakers season before it really gets going. In the opener against the Golden State Warriors, the big man is set for his official debut in purple and gold, and it comes after a frustrating shoulder injury limited him to just five games last season. For a team expecting him to be part of the frontcourt picture, the first night is already shaping up as a meaningful early gauge of where he stands.
JJ Redick has already framed Kesslers arrival as a developmental process, with the adjustment not just about health but about handling a bigger role and learning to mesh with new teammates. Kessler has said the pressure of joining the Lakers makes staying positive especially important, and that mindset may matter as much as anything when the season starts and the rhythm of a new team has to come together quickly. Warriors Suddenly Face A Porzingis Problem They May Not Solve Soon
Kristaps Porzingis future with the Warriors has quickly become one of those situations that hangs over a roster even before a move is made. After signing a two-year contract extension, he has recently been away because of an autoimmune disorder called POTS, leaving Golden State to navigate a major uncertainty around a player who was supposed to factor into its plans.
The Warriors have started looking into trade possibilities, but there does not appear to be an immediate solution on the horizon. For now, the more realistic outcome is that Porzingis stays put while the team waits to see how his basketball future develops, a reminder that some roster questions are bigger than the transaction window. Bronny James Just Drew More Pressure Than Lakers Fans Wanted
Bronny James rough start has already become part of the conversation around the Lakers before the regular season even settles in. During NBA Opening Night, comedian Tracy Morgan, a lifelong Knicks fan, publicly took aim at the young guard, adding another layer of attention to a player whose preseason has already drawn scrutiny for low scoring and shooting struggles.
The noise around James is especially notable because it is not just coming from outside the building. Lakers coach JJ Redick has also acknowledged the issues in his preseason play, which only heightens the sense that the evaluation is happening in real time. For a player still trying to find his footing, the pressure around every minute he gets is only getting louder. [Read more 🡒]
