Reign Return Home Facing A Big Lineup Test Against Tucson

Can the Ontario Reign bounce back from their recent struggles and prevail against the Tucson Roadrunners in this crucial weekend series?

The Ontario Reign are back home Friday night trying to steady themselves after a rough stretch on the road, and they’ll do it against a Tucson Roadrunners team that looks a lot different than the one they’ve seen before.

Andrew Lord’s club returns to Ontario after a split in Texas and then a flat showing in Henderson, where the Silver Knights handed them their second straight loss. Kings prospect Aatu Jamsen had the lone bright spot for Ontario, tipping in a point shot for the team’s only goal.

The Reign are also dealing with a notable absence up front. Leading scorer Martin Chromiak was called up to the NHL on Thursday morning, leaving Ontario without one of its most reliable offensive pieces.

The 24-year-old from Slovakia has been one of the club’s steadiest scorers since the end of the 2024-25 season, carrying that momentum into this year. Chromiak did not make his NHL debut against Ottawa, though there’s a chance he could get into the lineup Saturday.

In the meantime, Ontario did get a reinforcement of its own. Forward Jared Wright was sent back down and is expected to play Friday night. Through five AHL games, the former Denver University product has three points, including two goals and an assist.

The matchup won’t be a soft landing. Tucson has become a younger, better-organized team, and the Roadrunners have made noise on special teams. They sit third in the Pacific Division on the power play and fourth in the AHL on the penalty kill, which makes them a tough draw for Lord’s group.

Between the pipes, Erik Portillo is expected to get the start. It would be his fourth appearance of the season, and he enters at 3-0 with a 3.32 goals-against average and an .875 save percentage. In his last outing, he turned aside 20 of 23 shots in Ontario’s first game in Texas.

Here’s the projected Reign lineup for Friday, with any late changes to be updated before puck drop:

Jamsen - Pederson - Guttman

Hughes - Connors - Wright

Isogai - Lawrence - Pinelli

Brandt Clarke Injury Leaves Kings Facing An Unsettling New Question

Brandt Clarkes night ended early against Ottawa after the Kings defenseman took an upper-body injury and did not return. Clarke had already picked up an assist before leaving the game, but the bigger concern for Los Angeles came on the sequence that sent him to the locker room, a hit from Senators forward Hayden Hodgson that drew a major penalty and a game misconduct.

For a Kings blue line that has leaned on Clarkes development, the immediate question now is how long he might be out and what it means for the group in the short term. Head coach Peter Laviolette did not offer an update after the game, leaving the team and its fans waiting for more clarity on a situation that quickly shifted from a routine night to an uneasy one. Kings First Home Win Still Left Fans With One Big Concern

The Kings finally got their first home win of the season, but it came with plenty of stress attached. Los Angeles outlasted Ottawa 6-5 in overtime after a wild night that featured four second-period goals and a finish that kept the crowd on edge long after what looked like a comfortable lead had been built.

Ottawa stormed back late in the third period and forced the Kings to sweat through extra time, turning what should have been a straightforward celebration into another reminder of how fragile this team can look when the game gets loose. Quinton Byfield ended it in overtime, but the bigger takeaway for the Kings was how quickly a strong home effort nearly slipped away. [Read more 🡒]

Kings Nearly Blew Everything Before Escaping A Wild Finish

For a while, it looked like the Kings were cruising toward a comfortable win after building a 5-1 lead, the kind of cushion that should have turned the final period into a formality. Instead, Ottawa turned the game into chaos, storming back in the third period to force overtime and leaving Los Angeles to sweat out a finish that had no business being that tense.

The Senators comeback effort was enough to make the night feel like a missed opportunity for the Kings, even if they ultimately escaped with the extra point. Travis Green and Dylan Cozens both had plenty to say afterward about the way Ottawa kept pushing, while Los Angeles was left with the kind of win that still raises questions about how quickly a game can slip away.
