Reign Head Home Needing Answers After Another Flat Night

Despite a determined effort, Ontario Reign succumbed to the Henderson Silver Knights, concluding their road trip on a sour note.

The Ontario Reign couldn’t find a way back in Wednesday night, falling 4-1 to the Henderson Silver Knights at Lee’s Family Forum in front of 1,775 fans.

Ontario finished its three-game road trip at 5-4-0-0 and will head home to face the Tucson Roadrunners on Friday, Oct. 30 at Toyota Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. PST.

Aatu Jämsen provided the Reign’s lone goal, while Joe Hicketts and Kenta Isogai each collected an assist. Carter George made 28 saves on 31 shots in the loss, and Ontario went 0-for-1 on the power play.

Henderson got on the board first at 7:50 of the opening period when Lukas Cormier scored off a setup from Alexander Holtz and Jaycob Megna. The Silver Knights added to that lead later in the period on the power play, with Angus Booth in the box for hooking at 13:47 before Cormier struck again at 15:13, finishing a chance created by Jeremy Davies and Matyas Sapovaliv. That pushed it to 2-0, and Henderson carried that edge into the intermission after outshooting Ontario 8-5 in the first.

Ontario answered in the second. Jämsen, scoring his second, cut the deficit to 2-1 at 6:58 with Hicketts and Isogai picking up the helpers.

The Reign had a chance to even things up when Mitch McLain was whistled for holding the stick at 10:31, but they couldn’t cash in. They later killed off a slashing penalty to Hicketts at 16:45, but Henderson still controlled the period, outshooting Ontario 11-7 and taking a 2-1 lead into the third.

The Silver Knights quickly stretched it back to two goals when Joe Fleming scored at 2:26 of the third, with McLain and Mathieu Cataford on the assists. Ontario pressed with 14 shots in the final period, but Pavel Moysevich shut the door. Then, with George pulled for the extra attacker, Holtz added the empty-net goal at 18:38 to finish it off.

Henderson outshot Ontario 32-26 overall. Moysevich earned the win with 25 saves on 26 shots.

Ontario finished 1-for-2 on the penalty kill. Andrew Lord offered postgame thoughts after the loss.

Kings Begin Crucial Homestand With Lineup Uncertainty Still Lingering

The Kings are back home after a road trip that produced a 3-2-0 record, and the timing lines up with the kind of stretch that can quietly shape a season. Their seven-game homestand opens against Ottawa, giving Los Angeles a long run in front of its own crowd while the roster continues to sort itself out around a few lingering health questions.

Kevin Fiala is skating on his own as he works toward his season debut, though the team is not looking at him as an immediate option. In the meantime, Los Angeles has brought up prospect Martin Chromiak from AHL Ontario, and he appears positioned to get a look while the Kings keep tabs on the status of Drew Doughty and Quinton Byfield. Kings Bottom Six Shakeup Could Reveal Laviolette's Early Plan

Peter Laviolette is already making early-season tweaks to the Kings bottom six, a sign that the coaching staff is still sorting out which depth forwards can hold up at the NHL level. Jared Wright, who played in three of the Kings four games since his recall, was sent back to the Ontario Reign as the club continues to juggle its forward group and look for the right mix down the lineup.

In his place, Martin Chromiak gets the next look on the NHL roster after building momentum in the AHL and standing out offensively there. He has yet to make his NHL debut, but the Kings are clearly willing to reward production and keep testing options as Laviolette evaluates his depth players in the opening stretch of the season. Kings Loss Put A Bigger Blackhawks Problem Back In Focus

A recent win over the Kings offered the Blackhawks a much-needed jolt, but it did not do much to change the larger picture around a team still sitting near the bottom of the NHL standings. Chicago has been trying to hold things together without Connor Bedard, and the skid has only sharpened the questions around how this group is being put together and how much progress is actually being made.

Derek Blashills system has come under scrutiny as the losses pile up, and the power play has only added to the frustration. If the offense continues to sputter and the overall results do not improve, Chicago may have to start thinking about bigger changes behind the bench rather than treating this as a short-term rough patch.
