Reign Aims to Extend Streak Against Wild in Thrilling Iowa Clash

The Reign aim to extend their impressive 11-game point streak as they face the Wilds AHL affiliate in a pivotal two-game series in Iowa.

Get ready for an exciting showdown in Iowa this weekend! The Reign, led by coach Andrew Lord, are on a hot streak, riding an 11-game point streak as they head into a rare Midwest matchup. They'll face off against the Minnesota Wild’s top AHL affiliate at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines.

The last time these teams met was back in January at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, where the Reign secured two victories, 3-0 and 4-3. As they kick off this weekend's back-to-back series, the Reign are sitting comfortably atop the Pacific Division and second in the Western Conference. Their impressive 11-game point streak includes eight wins, setting the stage for a crucial six-game road trip.

This road trip is pivotal for the Reign, as they look to widen the gap in the standings. After Iowa, they'll head to Henderson for a single game before taking on Tucson in a two-game series. On paper, these matchups seem favorable, with each opponent trailing them in the standings.

However, underestimating Iowa would be a mistake. Despite being at the bottom of the Central Division, the Wild have been on a roll, winning seven of their last nine games.

Coach Lord emphasized the need for focus, acknowledging Iowa's recent surge: “We have to be really focused. They’re hot right now.

We have to be ready for the next game.”

Kings prospect Kenny Connors has been a standout for Ontario this season. In their last game, he delivered two goals, including a dazzling one-blade finish, leading the Reign to a 3-1 victory over Abbotsford.

Connors also shone in the season series against Iowa, scoring in Ontario’s 4-3 win in January. Martin Chromiak has also been a key player, notching three goals in the previous matchups against the Wild.

The spotlight tonight will also be on goaltender Erik Portillo, who is expected to start. Portillo made a triumphant return from injury in January, recording a shutout against Iowa. After facing back-to-back losses for the first time since October, he’ll be looking to bounce back and avoid a three-game skid.

Fans will also be eager to see forward Jan Jenik make his debut for the Reign. Recently acquired from the Ottawa Senators, Jenik is set to add depth to the lineup.

Here’s a look at the expected lineup:

  • Brown - Gawdin - Guttman
  • Alexandrov - Pinelli - Ziemmer
  • Lee - Connors - Chromiak
  • Hughes - Jenik - Doty

Defense pairings:

  • Kirsanov - Booth
  • Novikov - Millar
  • Hicketts - Dvorak

Goaltenders:

  • Portillo (starter)
  • Copley

Likely scratches include Isogai and Salin, with Burroughs and Jamsen out due to injury. Wright has been recalled to the NHL.

Stay tuned for any last-minute changes during pregame warmups. It’s shaping up to be an electrifying weekend of hockey!
