The Ontario Reign's impressive 11-game point streak came to a halt as they fell to the Iowa Wild with a 4-1 defeat in front of a lively crowd at Casey’s Center. The two teams are set to clash again on Saturday, promising another intense matchup.
Francesco Pinelli was the lone bright spot for the Reign, netting his 29th point of the season and matching his single-season high. Despite his efforts, the Reign couldn't overcome the Wild's offensive surge.
The first period was a defensive standoff, with both teams managing just a handful of shots-six for the Wild and five for the Reign. Each side had a chance on the power play, and the physicality was evident early on with Jacob Doty and Braiden Fischer-Simmons dropping the gloves just minutes into the game.
The Wild took control in the second period, scoring three goals to establish a commanding lead. Nicolas Aubé-Kubel opened the scoring with a precision wrist shot from the high slot.
Dylan Gambrell followed up with a power-play one-timer from the left circle, and Matt Kiersted capped the scoring spree with a booming slapshot. The Wild dominated the shot count, outshooting the Reign 14-8 in the period.
Pinelli's goal late in the third period, assisted by Kirill Kirsanov and Angus Booth, gave the Reign a glimmer of hope. The play developed from behind the net, with Kirsanov finding Pinelli in the left circle. Pinelli's shot found its way into the net amidst heavy traffic, narrowing the deficit.
However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Tyler Pitlick sealed the victory for Iowa with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, cementing the Wild's 4-1 triumph.
As the Reign regroup for their next encounter with the Wild, they'll look to reignite their offense and extend their impressive season.
