Mats Zuccarello will miss another game for the Kings, and this one comes with a familiar backdrop: a trip back to Madison Square Garden.
Los Angeles head coach Peter Laviolette told reporters that the veteran forward is dealing with an upper-body injury and will not play Monday night against the Rangers. Laviolette did not offer specifics on the issue.
Zuccarello had been in the lineup for each of the last three games, including Saturday night’s 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils, when he logged 13:20 of ice time. But this will already be the fourth game he has missed this season.
Earlier this month, an undisclosed injury kept him out for two weeks. He was placed on injured reserve, missed three games, and the Kings dropped all three before snapping that skid with a win over the Washington Capitals last Tuesday in Zuccarello’s return.
The early returns in Los Angeles still haven’t matched what the Kings were hoping for when they signed him to a one-year, $1 million deal over the summer. After a run of five straight 50-point seasons with the Minnesota Wild, he has produced just one assist in six games for his new club. He has gone pointless in his last four appearances, carries a plus/minus of +1, and is averaging 16:23 of ice time.
The Kings enter Monday at 2-5-2 and sit seventh in the Pacific Division, even after winning back-to-back games last week. Puck drop against the Rangers is scheduled for a little after 7 p.m. ET.

Kings Catch Rangers At A Telling Moment In Net
The Rangers are turning to veteran depth in net for their upcoming home game against the Kings, signing James Reimer to help bridge the gap while injuries have thinned their goalie room. With Igor Shesterkin and Joonas Korpisalo both sidelined, New York added Reimer to provide insurance and give young Dylan Garand a breather after carrying the load in the crease.
For Los Angeles, it is a notable time to catch a team still trying to preserve its perfect home record. The matchup now comes with a fresh wrinkle in goal for New York, as the Rangers look to keep things steady while easing the strain on Garand and seeing how quickly Reimer can settle into the mix. Kings Face A Lineup Test In New York With Road Trip Momentum At Stake
The Kings head into New York carrying some momentum from a road trip that has already produced a 2-1-0 mark, but this is where the test really starts. It is the first back-to-back of their season, and after getting steady goaltending to this point, they now have to see whether the offense can keep up outside of the top line while the lineup shuffles again because of injuries up front.
Quinton Byfield's status is one of the key pieces to watch after he was in a red no-contact jersey at practice, with coach Peter Laviolette hoping he can suit up. The matchup also comes with a familiar edge for Los Angeles, which has won five straight against the Rangers, but New York is set to counter with James Reimer in goal, adding another variable to a game that already feels like a measuring stick for the rest of the trip. Drew Doughtys Next Kings Deal Just Became A Real Story
Drew Doughty is in a different place this season than he has been for most of his Kings career, wearing the captains letter for the first time while also skating through the final year of an eight-year contract. The veteran defenseman has one assist in nine games so far, but the bigger conversation around him is no longer just about what he provides on the ice now, it is about how long he wants this run in Los Angeles to last.
The early signs point toward a player who still sees plenty of hockey ahead, and who would prefer to keep that future tied to the Kings. Doughty has said he wants to stay in Los Angeles on a team-friendly deal, even though extension talks with general manager Ken Holland have not happened yet, which leaves one of the franchises most important decisions sitting right in front of them as the season moves along.
