NEWARK, N.J. - The Kings got shut down in a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, held to just 13 shots as their five-game road trip hit its first real snag at Prudential Center.
Los Angeles had opened the trip with wins in Washington and on Long Island, but couldn’t keep that momentum rolling against a Devils team that is now riding a three-game winning streak and has won five of its last six. The Kings’ only goal came from Scott Laughton late in the second period, but New Jersey answered almost immediately when Anthony Mantha tied it with 1:17 left in the frame.
That swung the night for good. Brett Pesce put the Devils in front at 8:08 of the third period, and Artemy Gritsyuk sealed it with an empty-net goal. It also came one day after New Jersey added three-time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck in a trade from Winnipeg.
“It was a game in the third and we gave one up,'' Kings coach Peter Laviolette said.
The loss dropped Los Angeles to 2-2-2 on the road and 2-5-2 overall. The Kings had already been through a rough opening stretch before back-to-back victories helped steady the trip, but Saturday exposed the same problems that have lingered early in the season.
Laviolette pointed straight at the power play, which went 0-for-2, and at the lack of sustained pressure.
“We have to simplify it, get more pucks to the net,'' he said. “You do that, things break down and you can make passes. We’re too much on the exterior."
He also wasn’t happy with the second period, when New Jersey outshot Los Angeles 14-3 and kept Anton Forsberg busy in goal.
“It seems like we’re on our heels,'' he added. “We have to be more aggressive in our mindset."
Forsberg kept the Kings alive for long stretches, turning aside 23 shots and flashing the kind of form that stopped the game from getting away earlier. He made multiple strong saves in the second period, including two on Jack Hughes and another on Devils captain Nico Hischier.
For all that, the Kings never generated enough to back him up. Joel Edmundson said the middle period has been a problem too often already this season.
“We haven’t been playing good in the second period for most of the season so far,'' he said. “We need to get pucks deep.
When we did get pucks into the O-zone it was kind of one and done. We didn’t wear them down.
We made it way too easy."
Trevor Lewis gave Forsberg credit for keeping Los Angeles in striking distance.
“He was awesome,'' Lewis said. “He did it down the stretch last year. Bummer we couldn’t perform better."
Lewis also echoed the concern about the team’s pace in the second period.
“For whatever reason we are playing slower in the second,'' he said. “We have to figure out how to fix that. That’s on us."
The Kings now head to Madison Square Garden to face the Rangers on Monday before finishing the trip Tuesday at Chicago’s United Center.
“It’s cliche but we have to play good full 60s,'' Lewis said. “We have to put two whole games together, build on the really good hockey we know we can play."

Kings Face A Big Pregame Question As Road Trip Momentum Builds
The Kings head into New Jersey with some momentum, looking for a third straight win as the road trip rolls on, but the lineup picture is still not fully settled. Quinton Byfield remains a question mark going into the matchup, adding a little uncertainty to a group that has found its footing away from home.
Darcy Kuemper is in line to start again after his strong performance against the Islanders, giving Los Angeles a steady option in goal as it tries to keep the streak going. The Devils will have a notable change of their own in net, with Connor Hellebuyck unavailable for this game after their recent trade, leaving both sides to navigate a familiar kind of early-season roster wrinkle. Kings Hit First Road Trip Setback After Frustrating Night In Jersey
The Kings ran into their first road trip setback Tuesday night in Newark, falling 3-1 to the Devils at Prudential Center after a game that slipped away despite an early spark. Scott Laughton got Los Angeles on the board with his second goal of the trip, finishing off a feed from Adrian Kempe, but the Kings could not carry that momentum through the rest of the night.
New Jersey quickly steadied itself and turned the game in its favor from there, leaving the Kings to regroup after a frustrating result away from home. Trevor Moore, Joel Edmundson and coach Peter Laviolette all addressed the loss afterward, a sign of how much the club will want to clean up before the trip rolls on. [Read more 🡒]
Kings Fans Got A Frustrating Reminder About Ontario In Texas
Ontarios trip through Texas brought another reminder of how thin the margin can be for the Kings AHL affiliate, as the Reign fell 5-2 to the Texas Stars at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. Lane Pederson did his part to keep the game within reach, scoring both Ontario goals, while Cole Guttman chipped in two assists and Hampton Slukynsky stopped 14 shots in the loss.
The frustration, though, came in the special teams battle, where Ontario never found a way to cash in on repeated opportunities. The Reign went 0-for-7 on the power play, a stretch that loomed even larger as the game slipped away and left them searching for the kind of timely finish that could have changed the night.
