Kings Give Taylor Ward Another Chance With Boston Coming In

The LA Kings shuffle their roster by recalling Taylor Ward and sending Jared Wright back to AHL Ontario, highlighting strategic moves for the season ahead.

Saturday brought another round of roster shuffling for the LA Kings, with Taylor Ward heading back up to the NHL club and Jared Wright returning to AHL Ontario.

Ward was recalled and was already on the ice earlier in the day at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo as the Kings prepared for their matchup with the visiting Boston Bruins. Wright, who had been sent down and recalled earlier in the week, is back on the move to Ontario.

Ward’s back-and-forth has been part of a larger pattern this season, but he’s already logged significant time with both teams. Last season, he split the year between the NHL and AHL, appearing in 36 regular-season games for the Kings and finishing with seven points.

He also played in one playoff game. In Ontario, he was far more productive, collecting 21 points in 32 games, with 12 goals among them.

The 28-year-old forward also made his NHL debut the year before and made it count, scoring a goal in his lone appearance during the 2024-25 campaign. He also became part of the only father-son duo ever to play for the Kings.

This season with the Reign, Ward has two goals and three points in four games.

Because he cleared waivers after training camp, Ward could go to Ontario at first. He won’t need waivers again until he reaches 10 NHL games or spends 30 days on the Kings roster.

Wright’s path has been just as active, though for different reasons. He is waiver exempt, and October has featured multiple trips up and down. So far, he has played one game for the Kings and three for the Reign, including Wednesday’s game in San Diego.

Both players got extended looks in the preseason, giving LA’s new coaching staff a chance to evaluate what they bring to the table.

Kings Early Season Spiral Is Raising A Bigger Concern

Alex Laferriere gave the Kings exactly the start they wanted at Crypto.com Arena, scoring 31 seconds into the game against Boston. It was the kind of quick strike that can settle a team into a rhythm, but the lead did not last, and Los Angeles spent the rest of the night chasing a game it never fully got back under control.

The 4-1 loss was the Kings sixth straight to open the 2026-2027 season, another frustrating step in a start that has already begun to raise bigger questions about how quickly this group can stabilize. Now the schedule turns immediately to a five-game road trip, beginning against the Capitals, with little time for the Kings to sort out what is slipping away before the trip gets rolling. Kings Face One Huge Goalie Question As Trade Speculation Builds

The goaltending market is already starting to shape the conversation around the Kings, even before any real trade movement has materialized. Around the league, teams are weighing big-picture roster decisions, and for Los Angeles, the focus has naturally drifted toward Winnipeg Jets star Connor Hellebuyck as the kind of name that could alter the entire outlook in net.

The hurdle, of course, is figuring out what a deal like that would actually require, and whether the Kings would be willing to meet the price if talks ever got serious. With other clubs juggling their own roster and cap questions, from Minnesotas goaltending situation to Philadelphias stance on Tyson Foerster, Los Angeles is operating in a market where every premium asset comes with complications and few easy answers. Kings Depth Shuffle Ahead Of Boston Raises A Bigger Roster Question

The Kings made another small but meaningful roster tweak before facing Boston, recalling winger Taylor Ward from AHL Ontario and sending Jared Wright back to the Reign. It is the kind of move that can look routine on paper, but for a team juggling depth and lineup flexibility, it also says plenty about how close the back end of the roster remains in flux.

Ward is getting his first NHL recall of the season after clearing waivers last month, while Wright has now been assigned to the minors for the second time this week. Even so, this may not be a long-term demotion for Wright, since there is still a chance he comes back up again soon after getting into a game tonight, leaving the Kings with a familiar question about who is truly sticking and who is simply passing through.
