Connor Bedard Showed The Kings A Late-Game Problem Again

Connor Bedard's knack for thriving under pressure keeps him a key player for the Blackhawks, despite his ongoing battle to bolster his defensive game.

Chicago Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill isn’t hiding what he sees in Connor Bedard: there’s still work to do defensively, but when the game tightens up, he wants his captain on the ice.

That was the message after Chicago’s 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, a game in which Bedard once again had a hand in the biggest moments. Blashill pointed to the 21-year-old’s edge as the reason he stays out there late.

“ He gets knocked about defense more than he should,” Blashill said of Bedard to NHL media.

“There’s a reason why he’s out there at the end of the game. Because when the game’s on the line, he is hyper competitive.”

Bedard backed that up with 22 seconds left, blocking a key shot on the Kings’ 6-on-5 push and clearing the puck out of the defensive zone. He then forced a holding penalty in the neutral zone, helping Chicago burn off the final seconds.

The Blackhawks needed Bedard’s touch earlier, too. His pass to rookie Roman Kantserov tied the game late in the second period and snapped the team’s power-play drought. Kantserov finished at 16:40 of the second after Joel Armia picked up consecutive penalties.

Chicago kept the lead from there. Defenseman Wyatt Kaiser scored the winner at 7:17 of the third period, and Spencer Knight turned aside 25 shots to help the Blackhawks close it out.

The win also ended a three-game losing streak against Los Angeles.

Blashill’s praise came with a clear acknowledgment that Bedard’s game still has room to grow. The offensive talent is obvious, and that remains the center of what Chicago leans on. But as captain and the focal point of the young core, he’s being asked to become steadier without the puck, too.

That development has been part of Bedard’s climb since being drafted in 2023. He’s shown steady improvement, but each of his seasons has ended with a minus rating, and all of them have been in double figures. This year, he is -2 in six games with two goals and six points.

For the Blackhawks, that balance matters. Bedard can tilt a close game with his offense, but the next step is becoming the kind of player who can do it at both ends. Blashill clearly trusts him when the pressure rises, even while recognizing the defensive growth still ahead.

Kings End Road Trip With A Frustrating Problem Still Unfixed

The Kings headed home from Chicago with the same nagging issue they have been trying to solve on the road: building an early lead and then letting it slip away. Samuel Helenius gave Los Angeles the start it wanted at United Center, and Anton Forsberg did his part in net with 25 saves, but the Blackhawks answered back and turned the game into a one-goal battle the Kings could not finish.

Chicagos third-period push ended up deciding a 2-1 loss that felt all too familiar by the final horn. Los Angeles now comes back to Los Angeles for a home stand still searching for a cleaner finish, with the details of how this one got away likely sticking with the group for a while. [Read more 🡒]

Kings Waste Early Lead In Another Frustrating One-Goal Loss

The Kings left Chicago with a 3-2-0 road trip, but the finale was another reminder of how thin the margin has been for them lately. Samuel Helenius gave Los Angeles the first goal of the night, and for a while it looked like the kind of start that could help the Kings control the game on the back end of a long trip. Anton Forsberg was in goal for LA, while Spencer Knight handled the Chicago net as the game settled into the sort of tight, tense battle that has too often turned on one moment.

Instead, the Blackhawks found a response through Roman Kantserov and then the decisive strike from Wyatt Kaiser, turning a one-goal deficit into a one-goal loss for Los Angeles. For a team still trying to stack together cleaner performances away from home, this one stung because the Kings had the early edge and still could not turn it into points. They head home with a winning trip, but also with another game that slipped away after looking very much within reach. [Read more 🡒]

Ontario Reign Need A Sharper Start As Lineup Questions Build

Ontario heads into its meeting with the Henderson Silver Knights looking for a cleaner opening and a steadier stretch as the season starts to sort out roles. This is the teams second matchup of the year, and the Reign arrive in Nevada off a mixed run that included a split series in Texas, the kind of trip that leaves a staff weighing whats working and what still needs to tighten up.

One of the more notable pieces of the setup is in net, where Carter George is expected to get the start for Ontario. The projected lineup also suggests a little movement up front, with veteran Jacob Doty expected back in the mix and Vojtech Cihar likely to sit as a healthy scratch, the sort of adjustment that can say plenty about where the Reign think they need more bite early in games.
