The Kings’ 6-5 overtime win over Ottawa came with a concerning loss on the blue line, as Brandt Clarke left Thursday night’s game with an upper-body injury and did not return.
The injury happened at 11:15 of the second period after a dump-in by the Senators. As Hayden Hodgson raced into the opposite corner on the zone entry, he drove his left elbow into Clarke’s head, sending the defenseman into the corner boards.
Hodgson was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Clarke got himself to one knee after the collision and eventually skated off, but he was clearly hurt.
Clarke logged 11:37 before exiting and had already picked up an assist. After the game, head coach Peter Laviolette did not offer an update.
The timing is ugly for Los Angeles, which is already dealing with a rash of injuries up front. Mats Zuccarello, Alex Turcotte, and Kevin Fiala are all on injured reserve, though their absences are expected to wind down soon. Even so, losing Clarke for any meaningful stretch would sting for a Kings team that leans on his poise on the back end.
Through 12 games this season, Clarke sits second on the team in scoring with three goals and nine points while averaging 19:04 of ice time per game, which ranks sixth on the club. At 23, he has nearly 200 games under his belt with Los Angeles already, and his career line stands at 18 goals and 90 points, ninth among Kings since he entered the league in 2022. His value goes well beyond offense, too: he has blocked 355 shots, second among Kings in that same span.
The organization made that bet this offseason, signing Clarke to a five-year extension worth $37MM that runs through 2030-31. That deal should put him on track to become the team’s highest-paid defenseman, depending on what happens with Drew Doughty, who is making $11MM with one year left on his current contract.
Selected eighth overall by Los Angeles in 2021, Clarke has already established himself as a key long-term piece on the Kings’ defense, bringing calm and smart decision-making to a group that figures to keep building around him once he’s back. He posted 33 points in 78 games in 2023-24 and followed that with 40 points in 82 games last season.

Kings First Home Win Still Left Fans With One Big Concern
The Kings finally got their first home win of the season, but it came with plenty of stress attached. Los Angeles outlasted Ottawa 6-5 in overtime after a wild night that featured four second-period goals and a finish that kept the crowd on edge long after what looked like a comfortable lead had been built.
Ottawa stormed back late in the third period and forced the Kings to sweat through extra time, turning what should have been a straightforward celebration into another reminder of how fragile this team can look when the game gets loose. Quinton Byfield ended it in overtime, but the bigger takeaway for the Kings was how quickly a strong home effort nearly slipped away. [Read more 🡒]
Kings Nearly Blew Everything Before Escaping A Wild Finish
For a while, it looked like the Kings were cruising toward a comfortable win after building a 5-1 lead, the kind of cushion that should have turned the final period into a formality. Instead, Ottawa turned the game into chaos, storming back in the third period to force overtime and leaving Los Angeles to sweat out a finish that had no business being that tense.
The Senators comeback effort was enough to make the night feel like a missed opportunity for the Kings, even if they ultimately escaped with the extra point. Travis Green and Dylan Cozens both had plenty to say afterward about the way Ottawa kept pushing, while Los Angeles was left with the kind of win that still raises questions about how quickly a game can slip away. Reign Return Home Facing A Big Lineup Test Against Tucson
A home back-to-back against Tucson comes at a useful time for the Ontario Reign, who are trying to steady themselves after consecutive road losses. The matchup also brings a different look to the lineup, with the Reign facing a Tucson team that has been sharp on special teams and has given opponents plenty to think about in all three zones.
Ontario will have to navigate that test without its leading goal scorer, who has been called up to the NHL, while Jared Wright is back with the club and expected to suit up. Erik Portillo is expected to get the start in goal, giving the Reign a chance to reset in front of their home crowd while sorting through a lineup that looks a little different than it did on the road.
