Hayden Hodgson’s night ended early in a flashpoint that tilted the second period and sent the Ottawa Senators winger to the dressing room with a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding Brandt Clarke.
The hit came at 11:15 of the second period Thursday at Crypto.com Arena, when Hodgson drove Clarke hard from behind and sent the Los Angeles Kings defenseman into the boards. Clarke needed time to get back on his skates, but stayed in the game. The Kings’ response was immediate, with players around the puck taking issue right away.
Erik Haula was whistled for two minutes for roughing in the aftermath, though Los Angeles still came away with the power play. On that advantage, Artemi Panarin scored his eighth goal of the 2026-27 season to stretch the home side’s lead to 5-1.
For Hodgson, 30, it was another rough chapter in a pro career that has mostly been spent in the AHL and ECHL. The undrafted 6-foot-2 winger from Windsor, Ont., was appearing in just his 24th NHL game and his 17th with Ottawa.
Across his time with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Ontario Reign and Belleville Senators, Hodgson has been used mainly as an enforcer. He posted 134 penalty minutes and 11 points in 47 games with Belleville during the 2025-26 AHL regular season, and he was suspended multiple times for illegal hits and other aggressive on-ice behavior.
His NHL résumé includes a brief burst of production early in his career with Philadelphia, when he had a goal and two assists in his first six games in the 2021-22 season. Since then, he has gone scoreless in 18 games over parts of four NHL seasons, while adding 51 penalty minutes along the way.

Brandt Clarke Injury Leaves Kings Facing An Unsettling New Question
Brandt Clarkes night ended early against Ottawa after the Kings defenseman took an upper-body injury and did not return. Clarke had already picked up an assist before leaving the game, but the bigger concern for Los Angeles came on the sequence that sent him to the locker room, a hit from Senators forward Hayden Hodgson that drew a major penalty and a game misconduct.
For a Kings blue line that has leaned on Clarkes development, the immediate question now is how long he might be out and what it means for the group in the short term. Head coach Peter Laviolette did not offer an update after the game, leaving the team and its fans waiting for more clarity on a situation that quickly shifted from a routine night to an uneasy one. Kings First Home Win Still Left Fans With One Big Concern
The Kings finally got their first home win of the season, but it came with plenty of stress attached. Los Angeles outlasted Ottawa 6-5 in overtime after a wild night that featured four second-period goals and a finish that kept the crowd on edge long after what looked like a comfortable lead had been built.
Ottawa stormed back late in the third period and forced the Kings to sweat through extra time, turning what should have been a straightforward celebration into another reminder of how fragile this team can look when the game gets loose. Quinton Byfield ended it in overtime, but the bigger takeaway for the Kings was how quickly a strong home effort nearly slipped away. [Read more 🡒]
Kings Nearly Blew Everything Before Escaping A Wild Finish
For a while, it looked like the Kings were cruising toward a comfortable win after building a 5-1 lead, the kind of cushion that should have turned the final period into a formality. Instead, Ottawa turned the game into chaos, storming back in the third period to force overtime and leaving Los Angeles to sweat out a finish that had no business being that tense.
The Senators comeback effort was enough to make the night feel like a missed opportunity for the Kings, even if they ultimately escaped with the extra point. Travis Green and Dylan Cozens both had plenty to say afterward about the way Ottawa kept pushing, while Los Angeles was left with the kind of win that still raises questions about how quickly a game can slip away.
