Yamamoto Shines in Spring Finale
At Camelback Ranch, Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered a performance that Dodgers fans can get excited about. Fresh off his World Baseball Classic stint, Yamamoto looked every bit the ace, shutting down the Padres over five innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one, and struck out eight, setting the stage for a 4-3 Dodgers comeback victory.
Setting the Tone Early
Yamamoto wasted no time asserting his dominance. In the first inning, he struck out Jase Bowen, Bryce Johnson, and Ramón Laureano in quick succession, establishing a rhythm that carried through the night. The Padres had their only real threat in the second inning with two runners in scoring position, but Yamamoto coolly dispatched Nick Schnell and Jose Miranda to escape the jam.
Dodgers Offense Provides Support
The Dodgers' offense, often quiet when Yamamoto pitches, gave him some early support. Miguel Rojas, showing some spring energy, smashed a double down the line in the second inning, driving in the first run of the game. It was a small cushion, but with Yamamoto dealing, it felt like enough.
Cruising Through the Lineup
Yamamoto continued to make it look easy. He kept the Padres off balance, inducing a double play in the fourth and another to end the fifth.
His final line: 5 innings, 3 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts. Even against a split-squad lineup, his performance was a masterclass in efficiency and control, exactly what the Dodgers wanted to see ahead of Opening Day.
Challenges for Diaz
Edwin Diaz, another World Baseball Classic returnee, faced a tougher outing. After the Dodgers extended their lead to 3-0 with bases-loaded walks, Diaz struggled in the sixth.
He started strong but then gave up a double to Bryce Johnson and a two-run homer to Ramón Laureano. Chris Campos had to step in to close the inning.
Dodgers Seal the Deal
Prospect Eduardo Quintero added an insurance run with an opposite-field single in the sixth, making it 4-2. Though the Padres managed another run in the ninth, Evan Shaw shut the door with two strikeouts, leaving the tying run stranded at third.
One Last Cactus League Game
Before heading back to Southern California, the Dodgers have one more game at Camelback Ranch against the Athletics. Emmet Sheehan will take the mound, aiming to finish strong.
Fans can look forward to a doubleheader, with a Spring Breakout game featuring prospects from both the Dodgers and White Sox. Game time is 11:05 AM, with the second game at 3:30 PM PDT.
Stay tuned for coverage of both matchups!
