Trayce Thompson Joins Unexpected Team for World Baseball Classic

Despite a rollercoaster career, Trayce Thompson, former Dodgers outfielder and son of NBA legend Mychal Thompson, takes the stage for Great Britain in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

As the World Baseball Classic approaches, excitement is building with the announcement of team rosters. Among the standout names is Trayce Thompson, a former Dodger with a rich athletic lineage.

His father, Mychal Thompson, is a Los Angeles Lakers legend, and his brother, Klay Thompson, is a star shooting guard for the Dallas Mavericks. Trayce will be representing Great Britain, thanks to his father's Bahamian roots.

Trayce's baseball journey has been quite the ride. Originally a second-round pick by the Chicago White Sox, he quickly climbed their ranks before being traded to the Dodgers in a notable three-team deal. His time with the Dodgers showed flashes of power, but unfortunately, injuries took their toll, leading to his release in 2018.

Thompson's career took him across the league, eventually bringing him back to the Dodgers in 2022. Despite a promising start, a slump saw him return to the White Sox, marking his third stint with the team. His most recent play was with the Boston Red Sox's Triple-A team in 2025, where he posted a .226/.312/.405 slash line with 13 home runs before opting for free agency.

Reflecting on his journey, Thompson shared his enduring passion for the game in March 2025, expressing his determination to continue pursuing his potential. Now at 34, he knows his playing days may be numbered, but he's not done yet. The 2026 WBC offers him another chance to shine on the international stage.

Joining Thompson on Great Britain's roster are Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Harry Ford. While the team may not be favorites for a deep run, they’re certainly looking to make some noise in the tournament. For Trayce, it's another chapter in a career defined by resilience and a love for the game.
