The Dodgers may not be done with the trade market yet, and Tarik Skubal is the name hanging over the whole conversation.
Reports keep linking Los Angeles to the Tigers’ ace, with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal saying the Dodgers are among the teams interested in acquiring the reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner. Rosenthal also listed the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees as clubs that could get involved.
Detroit’s situation is only making the speculation louder. The Tigers are six games under .500, and Skubal is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, which has pushed rival teams to start circling. Rosenthal reported that the asking price is expected to be enormous, even with Skubal’s timeline to free agency.
That price could start with a demand for almost everything. Rosenthal wrote, "The expectation among some rival executives is that [Tigers president of baseball operations Scott] Harris will, at least initially, ask for 'no exclusions' in the Skubal talks, requiring teams to make virtually every one of their young players available."
He also reported that Detroit may want a controllable starting pitcher to replace Skubal, along with multiple prospects. The Dodgers, with one of the strongest farm systems in the sport, have the kind of prospect capital that could put them in the mix if they decide to push.
Skubal’s résumé explains why the market would be so aggressive. He has posted a sub-2.40 ERA in each of the last two seasons and made 31 starts in both of them. He missed five weeks after surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow, but he has been strong since returning in mid-June.
The Dodgers’ interest comes with a layer of uncertainty, though. Manager Dave Roberts has suggested the club may not make many major moves at the deadline, even with three starters currently missing from the rotation. Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani are expected to be healthy for the postseason, but health is never a sure thing with pitchers.
That’s where Skubal changes the equation. He would be more than a safety net; he’d be the kind of addition that could help push Los Angeles toward a third straight World Series title.
Skubal, for his part, said Thursday that he would prefer to remain in Detroit. He told reporters, "I think we have a chance to win a World Series. I've said that since Spring training,".
Still, Rosenthal noted that if the Braves, Rays and Brewers are unwilling to meet Detroit’s asking price, and the Yankees are focused elsewhere, the Dodgers could end up as "the most viable suitor."
