Shohei Ohtani Closing In On Something MLB Hasnt Seen

Shohei Ohtani's historic quest for the Cy Young Award challenges his limits as he returns to the Dodgers' mound with ambitions to redefine excellence in baseball.

Shohei Ohtani's return to the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season was nothing short of a spectacle. After a grueling two-and-a-half-year rehab, the two-way phenom was back, albeit limited to just 47 innings in 2025. But as we look ahead to 2026, Ohtani has his eyes set on more than just a comeback-he's aiming for the top.

Despite his impressive resume over the past few years, Ohtani is driven by an unfulfilled goal: proving he's the best pitcher in the league. At 31, his love for pitching is no secret, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes Ohtani is ready to make his mark as the league's premier pitcher.

Roberts didn't hold back, saying, "I think he’s already proven that he’s the best player, arguably ever. But when he’s on the mound, he wants to be seen solely as a pitcher-and the best one at that."

With four MVP awards, five consecutive All-Star appearances, and a slew of accolades, Ohtani's career is already legendary. Yet, the elusive Cy Young Award, particularly as the first Japanese-born player to win it, remains a tantalizing target.

Roberts acknowledges the challenge, saying, "It seems absurd, but if anyone can balance being a designated hitter and chase that Cy Young, it’s him. He’s team-driven, but personal milestones matter too."

The biggest hurdle for Ohtani is staying on the mound. His career-high of 166 innings in 2022 sets the benchmark, but injuries have often limited his time pitching.

Roberts emphasized, "Health is key. If he’s healthy and making his starts, it’s feasible. We’ve got a strong rotation, but his goal is within reach."

As for the Dodgers' strategy with Ohtani, flexibility is the name of the game. While they plan to be cautious, they’re ready to adapt based on his condition throughout the season.

The plan is to remain attentive to Ohtani’s needs, ensuring he’s in the best shape to chase that coveted Cy Young while contributing to the team's success.
