Boston’s run, meanwhile, keeps getting more ridiculous by the day. Friday’s 13-1 blowout of the Athletics pushed the Red Sox to nine straight wins and an eye-popping 32-5 mark over their last 37 games.
Payton Tolle did the heavy lifting on the mound, striking out 14 in six innings on just 84 pitches while giving up one run on two hits and no walks. The rookie lefty now owns a 3.20 ERA, a 28.5% strikeout rate, and a 6.7% walk rate across 19 starts and 107 innings.
The A’s, on the other hand, have dropped nine in a row and sit at 45-71, tied with the Angels and Rockies for the worst record in baseball.
Out in Arizona, the Dodgers’ skid kept rolling. Los Angeles fell 4-3 to the Diamondbacks on Friday, and rookie Ryan Waldschmidt ended it with a walkoff two-run homer to cap the comeback.
The loss ran the Dodgers’ streak to seven games. Even so, they still lead the D’Backs by 7.5 games in the NL West, though Arizona can keep trimming that margin over the rest of the weekend series.

In New York, the Yankees pulled off their own late rally. They wiped out a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth against Braves closer Raisel Iglesias, then Ryan McMahon finished the job with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th for a 3-2 win.
That snapped Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak, and today the Braves hand the ball to Chris Sale against Gerrit Cole. Sale, the 2024 NL Cy Young Award winner, will face Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, who has posted a 3.42 ERA in 73 2/3 innings since returning in May from Tommy John surgery.
