The Dodgers have their chance to finish off the Giants on Sunday night, and they’re doing it with a bullpen game at the front of the card.
Los Angeles is sending left-hander Jack Dreyer to start the series finale after pounding San Francisco in the first two games. The Dodgers opened the set with an 8-2 win on Friday, then followed it up Saturday with an even bigger offensive night, putting up 10 runs on 15 hits.
“I think this is the first time, seems like all year, that we’ve had four or five hitters swing the bats well for four or five games,” manager Dave Roberts said after the game. “So it’s been really good to see. Obviously, Mookie [Betts] is a big part of it, but everyone else is doing their part.”
The timing matters, too. The Dodgers are still four games ahead of the Atlanta Braves for the No. 2 seed in the National League race, and they remain two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top seed and the home-field advantage that comes with it.
Dreyer has been one of the more reliable arms in the bullpen this season. Through 63 appearances, he’s 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA, along with 68 strikeouts and 22 walks in 59.1 innings.
San Francisco will counter with lefty Matt Wilkinson, who made his MLB debut on Aug. 19 and has appeared in six games this year, four of them starts. He’s carrying a 4.58 ERA with 12 strikeouts and four walks across 19.2 innings.
Wilkinson has gone beyond three innings only once, when he threw six innings on Aug. 29. His last two outings came out of the bullpen, and he’s worked a combined five shutout innings in those appearances.
The Dodgers will be without Kyle Tucker, who is out a day after fouling a ball off his leg. Will Smith is also getting the day off.
First pitch for Dodgers-Giants on Sunday, Sept. 20 is set for 1:10 p.m. PT/4:10 p.m.
