On Aug. 22, 2000, Eric Karros carved out a little piece of Dodgers history in the kind of inning hitters dream about and pitchers try to forget. The Los Angeles first baseman powered the club to a 14-6 win over the Montreal Expos, and he did it by doing something no Dodger had ever done before: hitting two home runs in the same inning.
The game flipped fast in the sixth. Los Angeles carried a 5-2 lead into the frame, only to watch Montreal score three runs and knot things up. Then the Dodgers answered with a nine-run burst that turned the night into a blowout, and Karros was right in the middle of all of it.
He opened the inning with a solo homer off Julio Santana, who had just come into the game. The blast came on a 2-0 count and bumped the Dodgers’ win probability by 16% to 74%.
By the time Karros came back around, the Dodgers had batted around and were sitting on an 11-5 lead. With runners on second and third and one out, he launched another ball out of the park to finish the rally and push Los Angeles to 14 runs. That three-run shot took the Dodgers from a 99% win probability to 100%, which meant Karros boosted the team’s chances by 17% in that inning alone.
The two homers were his 29th and 30th of the 2000 season. They also made him the 34th player in MLB history to homer twice in one inning and marked his 17th career multi-homer game.
Karros wrapped up that season hitting .250/.321/.459 with 31 home runs, 106 RBI and 84 runs scored in 155 games. Across 12 seasons with the Dodgers, he put together a .268/.325/.457 line with 270 home runs, the most in franchise history for players in Los Angeles.
Duke Snider, with 389, and Gil Hodges, with 361, are the only Dodgers to hit more home runs in a Dodgers uniform, and most of theirs came back when the team was still in Brooklyn.
Karros spent two more seasons with Los Angeles after 2000, then played one year each with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics before retiring after the 2004 season. His career ended with a .268/.325/.454 batting line, 284 home runs and 1,027 RBI in 1,755 games.
The Dodgers later kept the Karros name in the organization when they drafted his son, Jared, in the 2022 MLB Draft. Los Angeles took Jared Karros in the 16th round with the No. 495 overall pick out of UCLA.
Jared grew up rooting for the Dodgers and was excited to join the club. In July 2023, he was honored as the California Pitcher of the Week. He has since undergone Tommy John surgery and is currently recovering.
