The Dodgers turned to Kyle Hurt for the second game of their doubleheader against the Yankees, recalling the right-hander from Triple-A Oklahoma City and using him as the club’s permitted 27th player for the nightcap.
The split doubleheader was set after Saturday’s game was postponed because of inclement weather in the area. Los Angeles handled the opener with a complete game from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, then shifted its attention to a bullpen-heavy plan for the second game.
Shohei Ohtani’s ongoing left knee irritation played a bigger role in that setup than the doubleheader itself. Emmet Sheehan could have been an option to start one of the two games, but the Dodgers pushed him to Monday so they could keep working around Ohtani’s absence from the rotation.
Hurt’s return comes after a brief trip back to Oklahoma City. He first joined the Dodgers on April 13 as the corresponding move when Ben Casparius went on the 15-day injured list, and he stayed with the big club until July 11, when the Dodgers optioned him and brought up Landon Knack.
Now he re-enters a rested relief group for a planned bullpen game, with Will Klein taking on the opener role for the third time this season. Klein threw two scoreless innings as a starter on May 15 and gave up one run in one inning on June 22.
The Dodgers sent Hurt down earlier this month after a rough stretch. He allowed a season-high four runs against the San Diego Padres on July 5, then gave up two runs when he started in a bullpen game five days later.
“I’m kind of doing the hard part, getting 0-2, 1-2 on guys, and just not executing and getting pitches where I need to get them,” Hurt said after the Dodgers’ loss. “I’m just kind of leaving things over the plate, getting into deep counts.
Those deep counts can lead to walks, and I just got to be better at finishing guys. Just put them away when I’m ahead.
So that’s that’s about it.”
Hurt also brushed off the idea that a bullpen game creates some unusual challenge.
“It’s not really a wild card. I mean, it’s a bullpen game, we’re all going to go out there and do our job,” Hurt said. “We’re expected to go out there when our name is called to get those outs.”
