Blake Treinen’s season is finished, and the Dodgers just lost another late-inning arm at the worst possible time.
The veteran reliever injured his shoulder while warming up in the bullpen Saturday in San Francisco, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Treinen will not pitch again this season. It’s a brutal ending for a pitcher who had only just come back from a long stretch on the injured list.
Treinen, 38, returned earlier this month after dealing with inflammation in his right elbow, an issue that kept him out for all of July and August. He got back on the mound for seven appearances, gave up three earned runs in 6.2 innings, and closes the year with a 4-1 record, a 3.64 ERA, and 29.2 innings pitched.
For the Dodgers, the loss cuts deeper than just one roster spot. Treinen had been working mostly in a setup role and was averaging more than a strikeout per inning. With the postseason approaching, his absence strips away another option in the back end of the bullpen.
A 12-year MLB veteran, Treinen has spent the last six seasons with Los Angeles and is one of the players who has been around for all three of the Dodgers’ World Series titles this decade. He threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series and got the win in the championship-clinching victory over the New York Yankees.
Since joining the Dodgers in 2020, Treinen has been a steady presence in the bullpen. Over six seasons with the club, he is 23-20 with a 2.88 ERA in 222 regular-season games.
Now a free agent after the season, Treinen’s age and injury history make his future uncertain. In his career, which started in 2014, he is 49-42 with a 2.94 ERA and 83 saves.
