The Dodgers are turning to a familiar name in the outfield after Andy Pages went down with a fractured hand in Friday night’s 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Los Angeles is expected to call up Alek Thomas to fill the opening, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Pages, the All-Star center fielder, is expected to miss at least four to five weeks, which puts his return just before the postseason.
Thomas, 26, was once one of the brighter young talents in the Arizona system. The Diamondbacks took him in the second round, and by 2022 he had climbed to No. 1 on their prospect list. MLB Pipeline had him ranked as the No. 18 prospect in baseball that season.
The bat has been the question with Thomas, even as his glove has stayed a real asset in center field. The Dodgers picked him up from Arizona in May after he was designated for assignment, and he has spent the time since in Triple-A while the organization worked to get more out of his offense.
That work has shown some results in Oklahoma City. In 55 games there, Thomas has hit .296 with seven home runs, 40 RBIs and an .855 OPS. Before the move, he was at .181 with a .563 OPS in 22 games for the Diamondbacks this season.
Over five big league seasons, Thomas has hit .230 with 31 home runs and a .634 OPS in 448 games.
The Dodgers do have other outfield talent in the system, including Josue De Paula, one of baseball’s top prospects. But for now, they’re leaning defense in center rather than making an offensive-first move.
“You’ve got to be mindful of the defense, certainly in center field," manager Dave Roberts said Friday night in regards to who the team would bring up to replace Pages. "Somebody that can handle center field.
We’ll piece it together. I’m not sure right now, but I do think that the main thing is locking down center field."
For the moment, Thomas, Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman are the names most likely to handle center field duties. If Thomas can’t get going at the plate, the Dodgers could eventually look to one of those top outfield prospects for more offense before Pages is ready to return.
Roberts said Pages’ absence should not extend into the rest of the season.
"It’s not season-ending, because obviously things like that is four or five weeks. So I would expect him back, knowing him, on the earlier side," Roberts said. "There’s still time in the season for him to be back, but I feel for him because he was having such a good year and he likes to play.
"But yeah, we’ve got to move on and hold down the fort until he’s back.”
