The Dodgers are making room for health on the pitching staff, but that has meant shuffling Emmet Sheehan back and forth as he tries to find his footing.
With Blake Snell back and rolling through his first two starts off the injured list, Tyler Glasnow close to rejoining the rotation next week, and Shohei Ohtani continuing to push his throwing progression in August, Los Angeles has had to keep adjusting its staff. That squeeze has already cost Sheehan a spot once this month, and now it has happened again.
Sheehan was sent to Triple-A earlier in August after a rough outing against the Boston Red Sox, when he gave up five runs and three homers and saw his ERA jump to 5.29. The Dodgers brought him back this past Tuesday as a long-relief option, but the stay was short. On August 21, 2026, the club announced: "The Dodgers recalled RHP Paul Gervase and optioned RHP Emmet Sheehan."
Gervase gives Los Angeles another bullpen arm at a time when the group is coming off an off day Thursday and should be in better shape physically. Sheehan heads back to the minors, where the Dodgers want him to keep building on what he has shown there.
In two appearances this month, he has struck out eight batters over 6 1/3 innings. If that continues, another call-up is very much on the table, especially with the Dodgers’ bullpen having its own issues.
Sheehan’s swing-and-miss stuff has never been in doubt. The real test is keeping the ball from being hit hard.
That’s the piece he still has to solve.
