The Dodgers are staring at another significant injury hit, and this one comes with a tougher timetable than they’d hoped. Andy Pages is on the injured list with a fractured left hand after leaving Los Angeles’ win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that the outfielder also underwent surgery.
Pages was hit by a pitch in the third inning by Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler, a 100.2 mph fastball. He stayed in the game at first, but the Dodgers eventually pulled him in the fifth.
Roberts said the procedure was minor and did not sound ready to write Pages off for the year.
“I don’t think it changes the timeline," Roberts said. "I think it’s certainly gonna be four weeks as the floor for [Pages] to be back with us, but, like I told him in the X-ray room, the season is not over for him, and we expect him back [at] full health.”
According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Pages "got a compression screw inserted into his left hand to try to speed up the healing process."
That leaves Los Angeles in a holding pattern. Pages is expected to miss at least four weeks, and the exact return date is still unclear. The best-case setup would have him back just before the playoffs.
It’s a brutal break for a player who had turned in a true breakout season. Pages has hit .272 with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs, along with a .796 OPS.
Roberts made it clear the club will have to get by without him for now.
“There’s still time in the season for him to be back, but I feel for him because he was having such a good year and he likes to play," Roberts said. "But yeah, we’ve got to move on and hold down the fort until he’s back.”
To fill the opening, the Dodgers called up center fielder Alek Thomas from the minors. Thomas joined the organization in May in a deal from the Arizona Diamondbacks and spent the year at Triple-A.
The glove is the selling point here. Thomas is considered a plus defender in the outfield, even if his big-league bat has been up and down. He made his Dodgers debut on Saturday against Pittsburgh and came through with an RBI single.
At Triple-A Oklahoma City, Thomas played 55 games and hit .296 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs, posting an .855 OPS. In the majors this season with Arizona, he hit .181 with two home runs and a .563 OPS over 22 games.
Thomas isn’t going to replace what Pages was giving the Dodgers, but he gives them a workable stopgap. If he can chip in any steady offense while Pages is out, that would count as a win for Los Angeles in the final stretch of the season.
For now, the Dodgers are expected to use Thomas mostly against right-handed pitching, with Tommy Edman and Kiké Hernández handling center field against lefties.
