Dodgers Suddenly Face A Dalton Rushing Problem For 2027

Dodgers' catcher Dalton Rushing faces a long recovery following major elbow surgery, as the team navigates lineup adjustments in his absence.

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing is set for right elbow surgery on Wednesday, a procedure first reported by Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times.

The operation is expected to be a hybrid internal brace procedure, and the recovery timetable is significant: Rushing is expected to be away from catching for nine months. He should be able to hit again before that, with a possible return to hitting by the start of the 2027 season.

That leaves the Dodgers with a bigger question than just when Rushing will be healthy. His bat may be back before his throwing, but without the ability to catch, his path back onto the roster is complicated.

Rushing, 25, originally landed on the injured list in early August after suffering a partially torn UCL. At that point, the Dodgers were hoping rest might get him back before the end of the season.

He did make an attempt to return. Rushing rejoined the club on Sept. 1 as a hitting option and started a throwing progression, but that plan hit a snag when he suffered a setback. He wound up back on the injured list.

Rushing later returned again at the end of the regular season, but he managed only three at-bats before the Dodgers left him off the postseason roster in favor of top prospect Josue De Paula.

Even with the season ending the way it did, Rushing said he was motivated by the effort to get back.

“In my eyes, me trying to throw is me showing them that obviously I want to help the team win,” he said at the time. “I want to give us the best available option that we have at that moment, and that was my whole plan all along. So I hope they see there wasn’t any selfishness in that.”

Before the injury shut him down, Rushing put together a solid 2026 season. In 80 games, he hit .246 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and an OPS of .788.

For the Dodgers, the catching issue looms large. Shohei Ohtani already fills the full-time designated hitter role, which makes a bat-only player harder to carry. Even if Rushing is ready to hit by the start of next season, it’s tough to see how he fits on the 26-man roster unless he can catch again.

A move to another position could be a theoretical option, including first base, but Freddie Freeman has that spot covered.

That’s why the Dodgers appear headed toward relying on Will Smith and Hunter Feduccia behind the plate. Feduccia, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays ahead of the trade deadline, hit .197 with an OPS of .585 in 34 games with Los Angeles and did not appear in a postseason game.

Shohei Ohtani Just Put A Bigger Dodgers Worry In Focus

Shohei Ohtanis October never really found its rhythm, and for the Dodgers, that only sharpened the larger concern hanging over a season that ended in a sweep by the Brewers in the 2026 National League Championship Series. After flipping the script on Milwaukee a year earlier, Los Angeles ran into a far different outcome this time, with Ohtani still working through lingering injuries that clearly affected him at the plate during the postseason.

He hit .230 in the NLCS and .192 overall in the playoffs, a reminder that even the sports most unique talent is not immune to the wear that comes with trying to do everything. Ohtani acknowledged Milwaukees strong run and said he may consider surgery in the offseason, but he also made it clear he still plans to keep playing both ways in 2027, leaving the Dodgers to sort through what that means for his health and their championship window. Dodgers Catching Depth Could Put Dalton Rushing In A Tough Spot

The Dodgers catching picture has gotten murkier again after Ben Rortvedt elected free agency, following a year of repeated designations for assignment and a string of transactions that kept him moving between Los Angeles and other clubs. Even after all that churn, there is still a sense the Dodgers could circle back and bring him in again, which speaks to how much they value having extra catching depth on hand as the season turns and roster decisions get tighter.

If Rortvedt returns, it could add another layer to an already crowded situation behind the plate, and that is where Dalton Rushing enters the conversation. The former prospect was left off the postseason rosters, and the Dodgers ability to keep stacking catching options may make it harder for Rushing to carve out a clear path. For a team that likes to preserve flexibility, the next move at catcher could ripple well beyond one player. [Read more 🡒]

Kik Hernndez Just Added An Intriguing Twist To Brewers' NLCS Win

The Dodgers season ended with a sweep at the hands of the Brewers in the National League Championship Series, closing the door on a shot at a three-peat and leaving Los Angeles to reset while Milwaukee moves on to the World Series. Kik Hernndez was among the Dodgers voices taking in the result, and he acknowledged how strong the Brewers were throughout the series while wishing them well in the next round.

Hernndezs reaction landed with a little extra weight because his own future is now part of the conversation. He is headed toward free agency this winter, and with no certainty yet about what comes next, his comments to the team that just knocked the Dodgers out added another layer to an offseason that is already starting early in Los Angeles.
