Dodgers Suddenly Face A Blake Snell Question They Didn't Want

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts faces a crucial decision on Blake Snell's playing status as the pitcher's groin injury casts doubt on his return in the final stretch of the regular season.

The Dodgers still don’t know whether Blake Snell will take the ball again before the regular season ends.

Snell left Wednesday’s start after just one inning because of a groin injury he felt before the game, and with only nine games remaining - including a key series against the San Diego Padres, where he is scheduled to start - Los Angeles is trying to sort out what comes next for its rotation.

Snell sounded upbeat about his chances of making that next turn. Manager Dave Roberts was much less certain.

“It’s a possibility,” Roberts said. “I like where his head is at, but he just can’t afford any more setbacks. So, whether it’s his next start or being pushed back or whatever it is, we’ve got to make sure that he comes out ready to go in the postseason.”

Snell said he knew something was off before he even took the mound, but he tried to work through it anyway. That plan didn’t last long.

“I wasn’t trying to use my lower half. It was only a couple pitches where I got into my legs and threw the ball hard,” Snell said. “Outside of that, I was kind of guiding it in there.”

The left-hander has dealt with groin issues before, and the history is part of why the Dodgers are being careful now. His groin problems ended his 2021 season about a month early, cost him a few weeks in 2022 and sidelined him for two months total during the 2024 campaign.

Roberts said he was glad Snell spoke up early rather than trying to grind through more innings.

“Obviously happy that he alerted us early to get him out of the game, not make it worse,” Roberts said. “He told me that he felt some tightness in his left groin, and it didn’t loosen up.

So obviously, the right decision was to get him out. I think, No. 1 is we’ll see how he comes in tomorrow, how he feels, get some more treatment and then when we get back to L.A., then we can make that decision if we want to get imaging."

For now, Snell says he still wants one more regular-season outing. Whether that happens will be determined over the next few days.

“The next couple days are really going to decide,” Snell said. “But I’d love to throw on my next [scheduled start day].

Either there or a couple days after. But definitely, I want to try to get one more in the regular season.”

Kyle Tucker Just Gave Dodgers Fans A Scare They Couldnt Ignore

Kyle Tucker gave Dodgers fans a brief jolt during the game against the Giants when he fouled a pitch off his right knee and had to leave the field. The Dodgers trainer called the move precautionary, and Tucker was later seen on the bench smiling even as he favored the knee, which helped calm the immediate worry around a player who has been swinging the bat well lately.

For a Dodgers team looking to keep its lineup humming, any moment involving Tucker is going to draw attention. His recent offensive run has made him one of the more reliable presence in the lineup over the last 15 games, so even a short scare like this was enough to put the focus on his status and how the knee responds once the adrenaline fades. Dodgers Chasing Giants Sweep With A New Kyle Tucker Concern

The Dodgers entered Sunday still managing the aftermath of Kyle Tucker leaving Saturdays game early with a shin injury, and they chose to keep him out of the lineup as they try to finish off a sweep against the Giants. Jack Dreyer is taking the ball for Los Angeles, with San Francisco countering with left-hander Matt Wilkinson, while Mookie Betts leads off and Freddie Freeman is in the cleanup spot.

For a Dodgers club trying to keep its momentum rolling, Tuckers availability is the new subplot to watch. His absence changes the look of the lineup for now, and the timing adds a little extra tension to a game already carrying the weight of a potential sweep, especially with the club still waiting to see how he responds after the injury. Blake Snells Status Just Put Dodgers In A Tough Late-Season Spot

Blake Snells latest setback has put the Dodgers in a delicate place as the season winds down. Snell left his last start after just one inning because of left groin tightness, and while he has resumed throwing from 90 feet as part of his recovery, the club is still trying to be careful with how it handles him this late in the year. Manager Dave Roberts has said he hopes Snell can make another start before the regular season ends, but the Dodgers are clearly balancing that optimism against the bigger picture.

The timing is what makes it tricky, especially with a series against the Padres coming up and playoff positioning still in play. Los Angeles wants to have Snell available without forcing the issue, and every decision now has postseason implications attached to it. Even with some encouraging signs in his recovery, the Dodgers are left waiting on whether they can get one more meaningful start out of him before October arrives. [Read more 🡒]
