Dodgers Make Strategic Move, Claim Jack Suwinski from Pirates
In a move that could shake up the Dodgers' roster dynamics, Los Angeles has claimed left-handed hitting outfielder Jack Suwinski off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. This decision comes just as the Dodgers are set to kick off their Cactus League play, marking the start of their 2026 season.
To make room for Suwinski on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers had to transfer fan-favorite utility player Kiké Hernández to the 60-day injured list. This move was somewhat expected, given Hernández's ongoing recovery from offseason surgery on his left elbow, which is likely to sideline him for much of the first half of the regular season.
Hernández, a versatile veteran at 34, rejoined the Dodgers late in the offseason with a 1-year deal valued at $4.5 million. His 2025 season was marred by the elbow injury, limiting him to just 92 games and resulting in a challenging performance with a .203/.255/.366 slash line, including eight doubles, 10 home runs, and 35 RBIs.
Despite these struggles, Hernández proved his worth during crucial moments of the Dodgers' 2025 postseason run, helping secure the third World Series title of his career-all with Los Angeles.
Hernández isn't alone on the 60-day IL. Joining him is right-handed relief pitcher Evan Phillips, who also re-signed with the Dodgers on a 1-year, $6.5 million contract. Both players are anticipated to return in the second half of the season, with Dodgers General Manager Branon Gomes viewing them as potential internal boosts akin to trade deadline acquisitions.
As the Dodgers gear up for another competitive season, the addition of Suwinski and the strategic roster adjustments reflect the team's proactive approach in maintaining depth and versatility. Fans will be eager to see how these moves play out on the field as the season progresses.
