Dodgers Stretch Justin Wrobleski as Starter with Key Pitching Change

Justin Wrobleski's reintroduction of his cutter is positioning him as a strong contender for the Dodgers' starting rotation amid competition and roster challenges.

Justin Wrobleski is making waves this spring as the Los Angeles Dodgers explore options for their starting rotation. After primarily working out of the bullpen last season, the Dodgers are stretching Wrobleski out as a starter, eyeing him for a potential spot in the rotation.

With Blake Snell delayed due to shoulder issues and Gavin Stone facing setbacks, Wrobleski is in a tight competition with Emmet Sheehan and River Ryan for that coveted final rotation spot. So far, Wrobleski has shown promise, positioning himself as a strong contender.

A key to Wrobleski's impressive spring has been the reintroduction of his cutter-a pitch he sparingly used as a reliever last year. In his own words, Wrobleski shared, “I kind of brought it back last year in spring training.

Just didn’t have to throw it a bunch out of the bullpen. … It just opens up a lot, especially now that I have more confidence in the changeup.”

During a recent outing against the Athletics, Wrobleski used his cutter effectively, notching three swings-and-misses over three innings. At 25, he’s adapting his arsenal to fit the demands of a starter, adding the cutter to his fastball and sinker to create a more versatile repertoire.

Last season, Wrobleski posted a 5-5 record with a 4.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and averaged 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings over 66.2 innings pitched. He also delivered five scoreless innings during the postseason, showcasing his potential in high-pressure situations.

This spring, through four Cactus League appearances, Wrobleski has a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 8.1 innings. He maintained six scoreless innings before a rough outing against the Chicago White Sox, where he allowed five runs in just 2.1 innings.

As the Dodgers continue to evaluate their options, Wrobleski's development and adaptability could be key to securing his spot in the rotation. His progress this spring is certainly something to keep an eye on as the season approaches.
