The Dodgers wrapped up a clean sweep of the Pirates on Sunday, blanking Pittsburgh 4-0 to push their winning streak to six games.
It started fast. Shohei Ohtani opened the game by grinding out an 11-pitch walk against right-handed reliever Lake Bachar, the longest plate appearance he has had this season. Freddie Freeman then moved the action to the corners with nobody out, and even though Mookie Betts grounded into a double play, Ohtani still crossed the plate for a 1-0 Dodgers lead.
From there, the offense went quiet until the fourth. Against Carmen Mlodzinski, Tommy Edman was hit by a pitch and Kyle Tucker followed with a single to put two on with one out.
Teoscar Hernández struck out looking, and the Dodgers used their final ABS challenge on the play. Then Alek Thomas delivered an RBI single to score Edman, giving him RBI singles in the fourth inning in back-to-back games.
Hunter Feduccia kept it moving with another RBI single, bringing in Tucker and stretching the lead to 3-0. In the fifth, Max Muncy added one more with an RBI groundout.
That was more than enough support for Blake Snell, who was excellent after working out of trouble in the first inning. He allowed a one-out single to Spencer Horwitz in the second, and that was the Pirates’ only hit against him the rest of the way. Snell did give up a two-out walk in three straight innings, but he finished by retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.
The left-hander has been on a roll since returning from injury, posting a quality start in each of his three outings back. Sunday’s shutout was his first scoreless regular-season start since his 12-strikeout performance against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 17 last year. Over his last 18 innings, Snell has a 1.00 ERA with 21 strikeouts and seven walks.
Pittsburgh never found a way back in. Over the final four innings, the Pirates went 0-13 with just one baserunner, while the Dodgers managed only one baserunner themselves - a Tommy Edman walk in the eighth.
The sweep gave Los Angeles a 5-1 edge in the season series against Pittsburgh, its best mark against the Pirates in a season since going 6-0 in 2021. It was also the Dodgers’ first shutout win of the second half and their first shutout since a 3-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on July 4.
After Monday’s off day, the Dodgers open a six-game road trip Tuesday with a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m.
