Evan Phillips' Road to Recovery: A Dodgers Asset on the Mend
Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Evan Phillips is making promising strides in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Though he'll miss the first half of the season, Phillips has already taken a significant step by participating in his first bullpen session of spring training with a squatting catcher. This marks an encouraging milestone for the Dodgers faithful.
Despite missing much of last season due to injury, the Dodgers demonstrated their confidence in Phillips by re-signing him on a one-year, $6.5 million deal. His limited action in 2025 saw him pitch just 5.2 innings across seven games. However, his previous seasons-2022, 2023, and 2024-showcase his capacity for heavier workloads, with 64, 62, and 61 appearances, respectively.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes emphasized the importance of a tailored approach to Phillips' recovery. Gomes likened Phillips' eventual return to acquiring a key player at the trade deadline, highlighting the strategic patience involved.
Phillips' Past Successes
Looking back at Phillips' standout seasons, his stats speak volumes. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, he recorded impressive ERAs of 1.14, 2.05, and 3.62, along with WHIPs of 0.762, 0.832, and 1.189.
Despite his limited innings in 2025, Phillips managed to keep opponents scoreless, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out six. His overall ERA with the Dodgers stands at a remarkable 2.22 over 201 appearances and 195 innings, with a WHIP of 0.938.
Dodgers' 2026 Pitching Outlook
As the Dodgers gear up for the new season, their pitching staff remains a work in progress. The six-man rotation will feature stars like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, and Tyler Glasnow. However, there are still uncertainties, particularly with Roki Sasaki's recent struggles.
Edwin Diaz is set to close, supported by a mix of young talents and seasoned pitchers in the bullpen. Phillips' return is anticipated to bring stability and depth to the Dodgers' pitching lineup, providing a boost just when they might need it most.
