Dodgers' Ohtani Stuns on Mound in Spring Debut Performance

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praises Shohei Ohtani's impressive spring debut, setting the stage for a promising season ahead.

Shohei Ohtani made a triumphant return to the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers, showcasing his dual-threat prowess in a preseason clash against the San Francisco Giants. In a game shortened to eight innings, Ohtani delivered 4.1 scoreless innings, helping the Dodgers secure a 5-1 victory.

Ohtani's performance was a masterclass in efficiency. He struck out four, walked two, and allowed just a single hit. His first inning was a breeze, requiring only five pitches to dispatch the opposition.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, speaking with SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson, expressed satisfaction with Ohtani’s outing. “I thought it was good,” Roberts noted.

“With the season around the corner, there was a lot of focus. It might not have been as crisp as he’d like, but it shows his talent.

Reaching the fifth inning was a win in itself.”

Looking ahead, Ohtani is set to pitch again in the upcoming Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels. While the exact game remains undecided, Roberts emphasized that Ohtani has little left to prove. The focus will be on a solid performance as they gear up for the regular season, with expectations of a longer stint on the mound.

Roberts added, “He knows what it takes to get ready. His arsenal is strong, and whether he reaches the fifth or touches the sixth inning, he’ll be ready.”

Ohtani's pitching arsenal is a spectacle. Against lefties, he leans on his four-seam fastball, while right-handers face a mix of the four-seam and his signature sweeper.

His fastball, averaging 98.1 mph according to Baseball Savant, ranks in the top 5% of MLB pitchers. Although his velocity on Wednesday was slightly lower, averaging 97 mph, he still managed to hit 99.9 mph on one occasion.

As Ohtani embarks on his 2026 campaign, all eyes are on him to capture the elusive Cy Young Award, adding another chapter to his legendary career. If his latest performance is any indication, he’s well on his way.
