Dodgers Need More From Two Key Stars In 2027

Despite a rocky start, the Dodgers are banking on Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz's resurgence to drive a title bid in 2027.

The Dodgers are banking on bigger things from Kyle Tucker and Edwin Diaz in 2027, and Brandon Gomes made it clear the front office still believes the bet was worth it.

Gomes, Los Angeles’ general manager, spoke about the two marquee free-agent additions during his exit interview, sounding encouraged by what he saw even after a rough regular season. The Dodgers spent $309 million on Diaz and Tucker before the 2026 season, with the expectation that both would help push the club toward a three-peat.

Neither player delivered the kind of regular-season return the Dodgers had envisioned. But Gomes pointed to their postseason production as proof that the talent is still there.

“So much of that was betting on the true talent of those guys, and while the regular season did not go the way anyone expected, their contributions in the postseason were massive,” Gomes said in his exit interview in response to a question from Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez.

He added, “If that is where we’re looking at, where we end up winning the division with a bye, and those guys are performing at their peak in the postseason, that’s a pretty good outcome for us.

“Really looking forward to next year for those guys.”

The Dodgers are headed into a year of change as they try to reshape the roster for another championship push, and Tucker and Diaz are a big part of that picture. Diaz is expected to give the club the kind of shutdown presence it envisioned when it signed him, while Tucker’s bat is supposed to help support an aging core and reduce the need to keep finding another high-leverage offensive answer.

That’s the upside Los Angeles is still chasing after a disappointing statistical return in 2026. Tucker and Diaz combined for just 1.0 fWAR that season, a sharp drop from their combined 6.5 fWAR in 2025 before they arrived in Los Angeles.

Even a modest rebound would go a long way. A jump to 4 fWAR combined would be a major step forward and a real boost over the course of the season.

Dodgers Fans Will Have Strong Feelings About This Massive Trade Idea

Any trade idea involving Josue De Paula is going to get attention in Los Angeles, and this one would light up Dodgers fans even more. Former general manager Jim Bowden floated a proposal that would send De Paula and other pieces to Washington for outfielder James Wood and shortstop CJ Abrams, a concept built around two young Nationals stars who are already established and still under team control for several more seasons.

For the Dodgers, the appeal is obvious in theory: Wood and Abrams were both All-Stars last season, and each would fit a club always thinking big. The problem is the price tag and the fit, which is why the idea reads more like a conversation starter than a realistic path. Los Angeles would have to part with premium talent for a deal that feels steep even before you get to whether Washington would ever consider moving either player. [Read more 🡒]

Dodgers Could Lose Another Familiar Front Office Voice Soon

The Dodgers front office could be in line for another changeover this winter, with Rocco Baldelli drawing attention in Seattles search for a new manager. Baldelli, now a special assistant in Los Angeles, has already been tied to other managerial openings since joining the Dodgers in 2025, and his rsum still carries the weight of his time running the Twins from 2019 to 2025.

Seattle is casting a wide net after Dan Wilsons departure, and Baldelli is among the names in the mix as the Mariners sort through their options. Joe Espada has already interviewed for the job, and Carlos Mendoza was previously under consideration before landing with the Phillies, leaving the Mariners to keep working through a search that could have ripple effects beyond the Pacific Northwest. Dodgers Offseason Plan May Hinge On These Undervalued Free Agents

The Dodgers are again weighing how much of their offseason to build from within and how much to supplement with outside help, with a few roster spots suddenly looking open as free agents depart. That puts a premium on value, and it explains why several under-the-radar names are being kicked around as possible fits for a club that can never really afford to stand still.

Among the options being discussed are Bryan Abreu and Jonathan Loaisiga for bullpen depth, along with Edmundo Sosa as a versatile infield piece. Each brings a different kind of appeal, whether it is late-inning relief help or a glove-first utility profile, and the broader question for Los Angeles is how much of that mix can be added without blocking internal promotions or overcommitting to short-term fixes.
