The Dodgers shuffled their roster again Monday, adding right-hander Carlos Duran to the 40-man and designating Chuckie Robinson for assignment before their game against the Colorado Rockies.
It’s the latest bit of roster maneuvering for a club that just cleared space by releasing Jake Eder to make room for Evan Phillips, a move that gave Los Angeles a little more pitching depth.
Duran gets the nod after a solid run at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. In 30 games, he went 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA, struck out 50 batters in 35 innings and held opponents to a .203 average.
The 24-year-old has logged seven minor league seasons overall, going 10-22 with a 4.23 ERA and 443 strikeouts in 364 innings. He’s also back for a second stint in the Dodgers organization after re-signing on a minor league deal during the offseason.
Duran’s path has already taken a few turns. The Dodgers originally signed him as an international free agent in 2018, and he spent parts of six seasons in the system before being traded to the Athletics for Esteury Ruiz. He made his MLB debut on May 22 last year, but it was a rough first look: one appearance, just one out recorded, three runs allowed on one hit and three walks.
The Athletics designated Duran for assignment in June 2025, and he spent the rest of that season in Triple-A. Across both organizations in 2025, he finished with a 5.03 ERA over 62.2 innings.
His return also comes after a setback worth noting. Duran underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, then got back on the mound in 2024 and posted a 3.71 ERA in 53.1 innings across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A.
Robinson’s exit came quickly after his latest call-up cycle. The Dodgers removed him from the 40-man roster just two days after optioning him to Triple-A so they could bring up Eliezer Alfonzo.
The veteran catcher appeared in eight games for Los Angeles this season and went just .087/.087/.087 with one run scored and one RBI. He also went hitless in two plate appearances with the club last season.
Robinson first got the call on June 11 when Will Smith landed on the injured list, and this was his third stint with the Dodgers in two seasons. He also stepped in for Smith and Dalton Rushing on separate occasions in 2025 when both were on the IL.
Across 60 career MLB games, Robinson is hitting .124/.157/.176 with two home runs, seven runs scored and six RBI. He re-signed with the Dodgers on a minor league contract this past offseason after first joining the organization on May 31, 2025, when the Los Angeles Angels designated him for assignment. He finished last season in the Atlanta Braves organization after they claimed him off waivers in late September.

Max Muncy Opens Up As Dodgers Debut Carries Heartbreaking Weight
Max Muncys rise this season has come with more than just the usual on-field work, and he has been open about the role the Dodgers mental skills coach, Brent Walker, has played in helping him stay grounded. Walker, hired in 2020, has become a steady presence for players who need a quick conversation, some pregame work or simply someone available around the dugout and on the plane. For Muncy, that support has helped him keep his mental health in a good place while performing at a level that earned him an All-Star starting nod.
The same kind of human backdrop was part of the day when rookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo reached the majors, a moment that carried far more weight than a standard debut. Alfonzo has been dealing with the recent loss of family members in the Venezuela earthquakes, and the timing of his first big-league appearance made the occasion especially emotional. He spoke about wishing his stepmother could have been there to see him make it, a reminder that sometimes a debut is about much more than the game itself. [Read more 🡒]
Dodgers May Be Giving This Catcher A Bigger Chance Than Expected
A little extra catching depth turned into a more meaningful opportunity for Eliezer Alfonzo, who was brought up by the Dodgers to back up behind the plate while Will Smith stays on the injured list. Los Angeles also added Carlos Duran to the 40-man roster, a move that helped shuffle the catching picture and opened the door for Alfonzo to stick around with a clearer role than a typical emergency call-up.
Manager Dave Roberts made it clear the club wants a closer look at Alfonzo while Smith remains sidelined, and that could mean semi-regular playing time in the coming stretch. For a team trying to manage an injury-hit roster without losing stability at catcher, the next few games may tell the Dodgers whether Alfonzo is simply filling space or beginning to carve out a more lasting place on the staff. Dodgers Suddenly Have A Bigger Concern With Roki Sasaki
Roki Sasakis latest outing only deepened the questions around the Dodgers young right-hander, who was tagged by the San Diego Padres for six runs on seven hits over three innings, with three of those hits leaving the yard. It was the kind of start that can rattle a rotation spot and, for a pitcher still trying to settle in, it put the focus less on the result and more on what was happening before the ball even left his hand.
Dave Roberts and Dalton Rushing both pointed to the possibility that Sasaki was giving away something in his delivery, a concern that can turn a bad night into a bigger diagnostic problem. Sasaki acknowledged he has work to do and said he needs to identify what went wrong before his next turn, which only adds to the intrigue as the Dodgers try to get him back on track. [Read more 🡒]
