A collector in Boca Raton, Florida, just hit the kind of card pull that reshapes the hobby.
Inside a case of 2026 Topps Chrome Baseball opened at Boca Sports Cards, a redemption turned up for the Shohei Ohtani Dual Gold Logoman autograph card - a one-of-one built to celebrate Ohtani’s back-to-back NL MVP seasons in 2024 and 2025. The card includes two game-worn Gold MLB Logoman patches tied to those awards, plus two Ohtani signatures: one in English and another in Japanese kanji.
That kind of card does not sit around for long. High-end collector Matthew Allen, known in the hobby as Shyne150, bought it for $11 million with the Secure investment group.
“The card just resonated deep with me, and I was like, you know what, I have to get this card,” Allen told ESPN.
The price puts the Ohtani card at No. 3 on the list of the most expensive sports cards ever publicly reported. Only the $12.932 million Michael Jordan-Kobe Bryant dual Logoman and the $12.6 million 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle have gone higher.
It also blows past the previous top end of Ohtani’s own card market. Just weeks earlier, a 2018 Bowman Chrome Superfractor sold privately for $3.365 million. Before that, a rare Ohtani relic card tied to his 50/50 season became the first Ohtani card to clear $1 million, a mark that has already been surpassed multiple times in less than a year.
The sale lands in the middle of a bigger surge across trading cards, where elite rookies and MVPs are pushing prices into territory once associated with fine art. Basketball has seen the same kind of climb, with a Victor Wembanyama rookie card selling for more than $5 million earlier this year.
For Ohtani, the timing tracks with a stretch of dominance that has made him one of the sport’s biggest draws on the field and in the collectibles market. Two MVP awards, two World Series titles, and now the most valuable card ever made in his name all tell the same story.
Whether this becomes the hobby’s ceiling is another question. Boca Sports Cards is already part of the lore after the card surfaced there, and moments like this are exactly why collectors keep ripping hobby boxes, chasing the idea that one pack can change everything.
